Legacy Reviewer's Review of AimShot HG-Pro Reflex Sights
I recently purchased two of these in the HG-PROC version ( 3 MOA dot with 65 MOA circle with crosshairs ), one for a CZ/D-Technik ( now CSA ) vz.58 7.62mm tactical rifle and one for a Mossberg 500 Persuader 12-gauge tactical shotgun. Results have been generally excellent ( see "Pros" ), and I must say that I am very impressed with the HG-PROC. It is easy to zero for windage and elevation, and once properly set will effortlessly hold zero on a 12-gauge shotgun firing 3" magnum buckshot and rifled slug loads.
One word of caution : The QD lever, as it comes from the factory, is set loosely and will need to be adjusted to fit snugly on your Picatinny rail. You simply pull the lever outwards against its spring and rotate the lever clockwise to tighten the fit, and vice-versa to loosen it. Also, the O-ring for the battery compartment is unlubricated and will need to be dressed with silicone grease to ensure pliability and longevity. Carefully remove the o-ring, taking care not to scratch or score the machined aluminum O-ring groove in the battery compartment cap and clean it before lubricating and re-installing. While the O-ring is off, look closely at the machined threads in the battery compartment and on the cap ; they may require careful cleaning with a fine nylon or brass wire brush followed by wipedown with a damp cloth to remove aluminum shavings from the thread-cutting process ( one of mine needed this ). Ensure that no threads of fabric from the damp cloth are left sticking in the threads and O-ring groove as this could compromise the pressure sealing ability of the O-ring.
Since the sight uses a single CR123 3V lithium battery and is energy-efficient, you can expect a long battery life ( of up to 6000 hours, according to the manufacturer ; presumably, this would be at a low brightness setting ). The 100' waterproof rating is extremely good, better than most EOTech sights by a large margin. The coated optics are very clear, with no viewing distortion even at oblique angles. The reticle is crisp and sharp with no detectable fuzziness at the edges. I personally prefer the versatility of the dot/circle with crosshair reticle, but the plain 3-MOA dot ( HGPROA ) and crosshair reticles ( HGPROB ) may serve other users better. I also really like the generous 34mm aperture with its wide field of view, and the digital brightness controls. The wide range of brightness settings is capable of spanning all visibility conditions from full-on noontime glare on a CAVU day here in Florida to use of a night-vision device on a pitch-black moonless night without blooming of the image.
The downside? The HG-PRO has a long body ( 4.75" ), and therefore takes up a lot of Picatinny rail space ( it will cover 10-11 slots ) ; if your weapon has short rails, you will have to consider a more compact sight or add a longer rail or rail adaptor. Some users may also not like the weight of this sight.
Bear in mind that the HG-PRO is one of those reflex sights that places the aperture away from the shooter's eye, as opposed to an EOTech, which places the sight body towards the barrel and brings the aperture closer to the eye. I have no issues with this, but others may prefer otherwise.
Pros: Extremely rugged ; heavy, solid machined and anodized aluminum construction ; accurate ; holds zero ; fully submersible to 100' ; has adjustable quick-disconnect feature ; long battery life ; multiple brightness settings with night-vision compatible ; superb optical clarity and sharply-defined reticle ; waterproof digital side-mounted brightness adjustment buttons.
Cons: Takes up a lot of Picatinny rail space ; unlubricated battery compartment O-rings.
