alpen 8 x 20 wings ed review

by squirrel man, from GA, United States Written on December 30, 2014
I really like the alpen wings 8 x 20 ed. Images sharp, views of the moon were astounding. I was able to see craters all the way across the surface of the moon.
For bird watching, images were extremely sharp and rivals the other binoculars that I own in 10 x 42 and 8 x 32, both being ED glass.
One and only little problem, needs lens caps of some kind. Other-wise perfect.

Meets expectations

The view is the sharpest of any other 20mm I've seen in this price range. Very little CA, and colors have a bit more pop than others. Build quality seems very good. Hinge tension IMO just right. Proper twist-up eyecups w/two detents, and that stay in place very well. Case is much bigger than the binoculars, but you can fit the neckstrap inside. The neckstrap is very comfortable, and is IMO larger and thicker than it needs to be for this small size of binocular.
The only negative is the focus knob. Tension is heavier than it needs to be, and changes as you turn the knob full travel. A Pentax that is half the price has a smoother and lighter focus knob than this one. Overall though, as the other aspects of this item are pretty good, I can live with the focus knob.
Pros: Sharp image
Cons: Heavy focus knob tension
