Peter Kurtz's Review of Armasight Apollo-Pro MR 640 1x50mm Thermal Clip-on Sight

Ordered in February 2015, promised every two weeks for several months. Made a huge mistake with they finally came in sometime around May? or June? and I had a choice to ship and pay or cancel... I sure wish I had canceled.

Anyone that 5 *'s this company I would guess is a paid for review. You would think that there would be more reviews but I think people that buy like me are embarrassed that they spent so much and don't have good things to say. I was embarrassed up until the last few days of customer experience with Armasight and now I am too angry to be embarrassed.

This is my personal experience

The unit picture and quality is not much better than other units at far less price in my opinion. I was not blow away by any measure. Next was the focus that is not as crisp as I had hoped. The focus range twisting from left to right is wide yet the actual usable range is so narrow that focusing exactly is difficult since it's so touchy. You really have to zoom all the way out and focus and then zoom in to a fuzz ball and know that it's is about the best it's going to do.

The battery screw cap threads are so fine that it's difficult to not cross thread. When I asked why they made the threads so fine I was told that it's military grade specifications for dust and moisture yada yada.... what? I was not born yesterday, any dust or dirt gets into these threads and it's a problem. Granted you generally should not have to mess with the cap in the dusty and rainy field or worse in the dark in a field, however, see below. And for sure our military men operate in laboratory conditions. Armasight... Small thin threads on a large cap... it's a badly engineered design by an office guy. end of conversation. Don't tell me some story about military grade specifications.

Then there is the recoil shut off. Nothing better than firing one shot at a pack of hogs in a field and having a complete shut down of the unit. In general with a 308 SCAR it shuts off about 1 in 5 shots randomly. It also powers off on it's own unknown reasons. After a few minutes of use, it will start to power off when it calibrates then after a few minutes of that it will power up then shut off when it auto calibrates and at that point only a new set of batteries will allow it to work again. This is after maybe 10 minutes of operation. Sometimes if you take out the batteries and knuckle rap the sight then put the batteries back in it will power up but then shuts down again soon thereafter (the battery cap at night in the field).

one off lemon you say, well this is after it's been back to Armasight for repair of these same out of the new box reported issues. After the first repair and test it still does the same thing and seems to have not been repaired or tested.

I asked them how they test the recoil shut down and they said they have a calibrated machine. So then how is it rated for a .50 cal? Answer: "the machine is calibrated to represent a .50 cal recoil". Me "your machine calibration must be off because my sight shuts off on a .308 recoil" I asked them to take my sight, mount it to a .308 and take it out and shoot with it for a while to fully test it and the guy literally laughed at me and asked if I knew where they were. with attitude... "In California we can't just go out back and shoot guns". So go to a range buddy, or do you not care the least about how the product actually performs in the field.

It's on the way back to me again after the second time in the shop... fixed for FREE! (as noted on the invoice that tells me nothing). I am so angry with Armasight customer support and upper management that I am compelled to share my experience. To Armisight, my time and ammo cost to continually try their suggestions of replacing batteries, tightening the cap, making sure batteries are in correctly and to take it out and test it and now sight this thing in a 3rd time with no real usable hours on it is all just FREE... The level of care they have for someone that spent $7K on one of their devices is pathetic. The problem starts from the CEO and goes down through all upper management to the techs that work on the equipment. They seem to care less about their clients. They were all copied on several emails detailing issues and requesting answers with copies of one line tech responses to me saying their fixing it. Then today, no acknowledgement of any problems, no testing report, just a shipping notice that it's on the way back. Whoohoo. my confidence that the sight will work properly is at an all time low.

No acknowledgement from upper management and I copied a bunch of them. Director of this, and vice president of that, CEO etc. They have my cell phone, email, business address, they can find me if they wanted to, I am not hard to look up.

Anyway. That is my experience. It may work when I get it back but based on the experience and attitude I got from them I seriously doubt they care enough to ensure the product works.
