Richard's Review of Armasight Apollo-Pro MR 336 1x Thermal Imaging Clip-on System

Not that it's available anymore, so probably a moot point, but maybe help somebody decide about buying used or a similar model. I had high expectations going in to this, especially for this kind of money. First off, the bluetooth connectivity was discontinued about 4 years ago, according to the vendor I bought from. While not critical, I really think this is an important feature. I also found the unit very clunky and hard to use. Focus is really difficult, especially if it is mounted in front of a scope. It put the focus ring waaay out there. They say you can just bolt on and go, but this is not true: You are looking at a screen that is in an arbitrary and adjustable place. My scope zero was pretty far off, disappointing because the manual does not say how to zero, so I shot it for the first time after dark in a remote place only to find it was inaccurate. For some reason my reticle disappeared, and the buttons that were supposed to toggle it on and off did not work, nor did a factory reset (Even customer service from the vendor the next day couldn't get my reticle back on). I did not have the time or means to fix it in the dark, so that trip was wasted. Also has a fairly narrow view when seen through any magnified optic at all. The best use is for tripod/bench rest ONLY, as it is far too heavy to hold and adjust. Plan on a LPVO or maybe an EOTech for the optic in front of this, anything else and you won't see much.
For all these reasons, I returned mine, and plan on getting some helmet-mounted night vision goggles instead.
Pros:
  • None
Cons:
  • Not worth the money to me
Best Used for:
  • bench rest and hunting
Would Recommend: No
