John Wood's Review of Armasight Nyx-14 PRO 3 Bravo Multi-Purpose Night Vision Monocular Gen 3 with build-in Class 1 IR Laser Designator
If you're familiar with Night vision, this item is going raise an alarm bell because it looks too good to be true. Rest assured, this is the real deal, but it's not for people afraid of reading and research. The Price is due to it being a closeout, and not the standard kit. Get em now, they aren't coming back.
This item is an excellent value, and performs well, however you need to know a couple caveats about what you're in for. Armasight has been bought by FLIR, and the Nyx line has been discontinued; if you don't buy the Armasight accessories you want here on OpticsPlanet while they're in stock, you're out of luck, and will never get another one 'new'. YES, FLIR IS HONORING THE WARRENTY, the three year warranty if you register your purchase with them. It's definitely a Gen 3 device; not Gen 2, the light requirements to see, are extremely low. Based on my research, these use Photonis IITs, but I can't verify that personally. The Bravo line supposedly is the line that has more blemishes than the alpha, or pinnacle; mine has a single dot centered, about 1/3rd from the top. It's there, but it's not distracting. If you've ever worn glasses, you wouldn't notice it or care. For the money, it's a heck of a bargain. I can navigate the house with all the lights off, and the shades closed. My garage gets pitch black and the Ryobi battery tender in the corner gave enough glow to safely navigate under Nods. At one point when I was messing around outside, I was blown away how many stars I could see. A neighbor had a campfire/party going on next door that I could smell but not see any sign of. Under NODs, I could see the firelight dancing off the top of their trees which I thought was pretty cool. Shadows aren't an issue, you can see into them outside, but moving is a definite skill you need to learn. Looking down isn't... easy with a skull crusher. These may say "Factory demo" but I'm willing to bet mine wasn't turned on ever. the accessory pack including battery was still completely sealed and there weren't any handling marks anywhere on it that I could find.
Couple notes that might help anybody else:
The housing is NOT a PVS-14 housing. These use a MUM-14 housing, so the accessories/mounting options differ a bit, you'll need to do more research picking up mounts and bridges, but the MUM-14 has definite aftermarket support. The weight on this unit is awesome. Good size too. The bag it comes in/with is your standard PVS-14 accessory kit bag. I'd suggest getting a more shock proof container for it. If you own an Eotech holographic sight, the case fits the Nyx perfectly.
The objective and ocular lens housings are threaded; a standard camera 28mm lens filter should thread right in according to a friend on the NVG forums; I ordered a set off amazon and won't arrive till the end of month so I can't vouch yet.
The IR light has two modes, Flood and Focused; reminds me of an old MagLight in terms of spill/focus. It's perfectly adequate indoors, and outside for moving. The throw isn't great, but for a built in IR light, be realistic. There's a reason IR Illuminaters are a thing. Inside 40yards, you'll see what you're doing with the built in light. The IR laser is... interesting. I can see several tactical applications for it, but I think it's worth pointing out that the glow that comes off the laser does a good job illuminating the room if you need just a touch more light for a second but don't want to turn on the flood.
The power dial has three settings, Left is On, center is off, right is On+IR. You need to press the dial in, in order to move to either on position, but just turning will get you back to Off.
The daylight training caps are pretty flimsy where the retaining loop fits over the NVD. The cap itself is decent, but I'm still gonna get a Flip pinhole cover and use the original as a backup.
All things considered, I'd call it a bargain, well thought out, light weight and the Tubes are legit. If I wasn't poor now, I'd buy another for my wife/loaner. It will get the job done, you've got a leg up on the majority of the population who DOESN'T have NODs, and it's not so expensive you'll be afraid to actually use it/train with it. 1.5K is way more usable than 3.5-5K IMO. Get a head mount, and some antifog and get out there!
Final point; mine came with the 5x magnifier. Magnifier won't weapon mount, and you're not going to head mount it. It's a bit gimmicky, but I appreciate they thought of the "What if you need to observe at long range at night, and you don't have a night scope?" situation. Options. Spice of life.
