If you are looking to spend less than $500, digital night vision is what you should look at.
The nice thing about digital night vision is that it isn't damaged by direct light exposure. That makes it great for loaning to friends or using in environments where you might encounter direct light sources.
The downside to digital is that it is highly IR dependent when there is little to no ambient light. But this unit performs well in most conditions, anything over 100yds is hard to see.
Great unit for casual observation, but the 5x magnification makes it tough to use for navigation.
I've used it around my property to see what's moving about and have used it on a boat as well to see breakwalls.
I am a fan of Armasight products and this one is no exception.
