For a 2+ gen device this is a great deal. As far as optics I have gotten just what I expected out of them. The main reason for the high cost of more than Gen 1 products is the better light amplifying tube. This is a very effective night vision device. If you want the most versatility, a separate IR illuminator is a must, the one that comes on the unit is not sufficient for anything beyond 3m.
I am disappointed in the quality of the parts and headgear, just not very good. The headgear does hold the unit secure, I'm just offering my first impression.
All else aside, I believe one can get his/her money's worth out of this device, accepting the limitations of Gen 2 and night vision in general.
