Len113US's Review of Athlon Optics Argos 20-60x85mm HD Spotting Scopes

I bought this scope hoping is would be good enough to not force me to exchange it for one costing 2 to 3 times as much. It rated five stars FOR THIS PRICE POINT. Nice features like 2 1/4 inch rotate to extend eyepiece, big, body mounted focus ring, and rotation adjustment. Like most zoom lenses and almost all spotting scopes, it lets in less light as you zoom. That is the nature of doom optics. Color saturation begins to fall off above 40x. But I can still make out then differences between average or trophy elk at a mile away at duck, even if colors are not pretty. Spotting 22 cal targets at 150 yards is easy. I can read one inch tall letters on no parking signs 1/2 mile away in sunny daylight. Shaded license plates at the same distance are difficult to read. At night, although this is a terrestrial scope with no way to add a neutral density filter, you can easily see Jupiter's moons and can barely make out its cloud bands. All in all, a very good scope for the average shooter like me at a reasonable price. Specialty needs shooters may want to spend a specialty price.
Pros:
  • 1. Price 2. large eyepiece with twist to extend.3. large, barrel mounted focus ring. 4. rotating tripod mount. 5. excellent resolution for the price.
Cons:
  • 1. light falloff above 40x
  • 2. Very narrow depth of field at 60x. delicate touch on focus ring required.
Best Used for:
  • Spotting targets at the range, hunting, looking at the moon.
