The safe is already pretty shallow because it fits in-wall, but the battery compartment and lock mechanism really limit the inside space further, especially on the center shelf. Overall, the safe seems well made and was easy to install and program. Works well recognizing fingerprints. Would suggest 4 improvements for the manufacturer in addition to reconfiguring the lock mechanism: 1. There is not a suitable place to grip when opening the door. The cross inside the "wheel" to the left should be beveled towards the inside so as to provide better grip. Right now it is smooth and fingers slide off easily. 2. Offer this with a left or right opening option. Safe door only opens to the right. 3. Add more options with the shelf placement as shelf height is pre-set unless you want to drill more holes in the safe walls. 4. Shelves should have the option of having the lip face upward so as to keep items from sliding off when the door is opened. Oh yes, one more: don't slap the large plastic "Barska" logo plate on the front (that isn't shown in the product photo.) It was crooked on my safe and made it look cheap. Since the plate was only glued on I removed it, but it left glue residue which was a pain to clean off. Was pleased that Optics Planet matched the lower Amazon price and the item arrived quickly.
