Great little knife.

by Tom, Verified Owner from VA, United States Written on April 2, 2017
I bought this knife for everyday carry and that is what it is best at. Light weight and small size make this knife easy to pocket carry. The spring assist is very useful for one hand operation. The blade is plenty large enough for everyday tasks and the coating seems to be tough enough to hold up for the long haul.
Pros:
  • Easy to carry
Cons:
  • None

Benchmade 585 Mini-Barrage

by Brian Fitzgerald, from NY, United States Written on December 23, 2016
This is my go to EDC and has been for at least 5 years. Perfect size for a front or back pocket. I enjoy the axis assist opening and would rate it to be smoother, stronger, and easier to initiate than the assist opening of my Kershaw Blur or Gerber Propel. After 5 years of daily use the axis assist is just as strong as it was the first day. Fully ambidextrous, bilateral opening thumb studs, and reversible pocket clips. I also appreciate the spine safety lock that can be deployed when the knife is open or closed to lock the blade in its current position. I typically use a serrated drop point blade. The 154CM steel blade retains edge and sharpness well, yet is easy to sharpen. For the black coated blades, the coating will wear off where the blade is sharpened to show the satin blade underneath but otherwise the coating has maintained even through heavy use. If considering the Barrage family, the full size (580) to me is too big to carry on one's self but is suitable to go in a backpack. The only concern I can share for a potential buyer is the Valox handle material could be slippery when wet to some (other grip materials are available). I personally have never had a grip issue even when the handle is wet but I use it for everyday use and have not had to use it in a emergency scenario where I can not afford some care to the safe use of the knife. To note, Benchmade has updated the knife offering it with S30V steel blades and grey G10 handles if that is your preference. ...
