I installed it onto the rifle and now it looks like it should've when I paid the $$$$ for it. That being said, I didn't feel like buying the special pliers for the clip removal so after some reading on the M14 forum I followed one person's idea of using thin wire looped through the holes in the clip and securing one of them into my bench-mounted vise and wrapping the other wire around the jaws of my vise grips and pulling the clip apart just to remove it from the plastic handguard. I then used this same system to install it onto the wooden handguard and took my time while doing it.
To initially remove the plastic handguard (with clip attached) I disassembled the rifle and removed the op-rod assembly and gas piston housing then I was able to carefully slide the plastic handguard off the barreled action. When reinstalling the wood handguard with clip already installed onto it, figure out where the handguard will sit at on the barrel and carefully push it straight down onto the barreled action. Keep the wires looped through the holes and if needed, pull the clip open some so that way you dont have to use a lot of downward force to avoid cracking the wood at its most vulnerable spot and most importantly..take your time, don't rush this.

BTW my handguard matched up with my stock's grain and color quite well, it looks like it came from Springfield that way so I am pleased with this purchase. The fit was good but I did use some 80 grit sandpaper on the underside of the handguard j...

Absolutely stunning once installed, most people mistake my M1A for a M1 Garand. No problem after a 100 rounds down range, even with a small split at the top during install.

Note: You may need cut the length to prevent splitting during installation, in my case it was 3/16”. You also need to check if the operating rod is hit the wood when it cycles. I notched mines with a razor blade.

The wooden hand guard had a knot in the grain and split.

A nice addition, great fit and a nice piece of walnut instead of plastic/fiberglass

First let me be clear this is a beautiful piece of furniture to make you M1A have an all wood look instead of the plastic piece that comes stock on the Springfield M1A. Now lets get to the frustrating part if you do not have the proper tool to remove and install the clip that holds this to the gun you will inevitably crack or break the thin wood where this band/clip goes. At this point I am out about 90 bucks and debating on ordering the tool needed and another Handguard. As thin as this piece of wood is I now would worry if I was able to get one on if heat from barrel and weather would cause same out come in time???

Good looking part but, not a good fit. It cracked and broke on installation.

I don't understand all of the bad review i got mine and it installed no problem. I didnt have to do any sanding or additinal work to it slid right on. If you where wondering how to install all you have to do is unscrew the gas system and slide components forward and the hand gaurd should slide right off

Fit was almost perfect just minor sanding, two coats of linseed oil job done. I don’t understand all bad reviews that have been posted,I only need to buy one special tool to install the spring clamp. I can use the new tool on my M1 as well!

Unfortunately the wood split after installation. Nice looking hand guard, until it split. It needed a little sanding on the end to adjust for fit, which was easy to do. Applied linseed oil and let sit for 15 min. Wiped off the excess and installed. 3 days later, it split from the clip end to about halfway down the hand guard.
