dubyam's Review of Breek Arms AR-15 RG2-S MLOK Handguard
Picked up the 9.7" version for an SBR upper build that is a 10.5" 300BLK setup. Handguard is nicely finished, heavy enough to be sturdy, and comfortable in the hand. Seems like it's built well enough to be durable in the long-term, but I've owned it for less than a month so I can't make a definitive statement on durability. The supplied barrel nut is robust and will hold well. It fit my 1 1/4" crow-foot perfectly for torqueing the barrel in place. Retention is good, though a slightly different design than I'm used to on other handguards. This one uses two small wedges cross-bolted into openings on the right/left of the handguard. Unlike other HGs I've installed, the cross bolts don't ride in slots in the barrel nut. Instead the inner portion of the two wedges ride in a wide groove in the barrel nut. They do a good job keeping the whole thing from being able to slide forward. The top rail is picatinny spec, but not as tight as I might like for some accessories. Had no trouble installing an MBUS front sight on the rail, and it's so far not shifted or moved. I don't think it will be an issue, though if you were going to forward mount a red-dot or some other electronic sighting device (mine is on the receiver, not the rail), the slightly oversize slots might present an issue. I'd rather have a little extra clearance than the slots be too tight, though, so overall not a huge issue. Like I said, the MBUS hasn't moved yet so I'm good. Mlok slots on this HG are good to go. Accessories fit and install with ease, and hold fast like you expect Mlok to do.
The two areas I see where this HG falls short are the price (I bought it at a hundred bucks for the 9.7" HG and a "free" ambi charging handle) and the lack of locator tabs on the rear of the HG where it meets the receiver. The deal on this was good considering the CH is at least decent quality comparable to other $30-50 CHs on the market. But I wouldn't pay that price for just this HG, I don't think. Maybe I would - everything is asininely expensive in the demofascist world we currently endure - but I'd shop harder if the deal wasn't as good on this unit. I suspect one could get a better deal or better equipment or both if you shop, as compared to a hundred for just the HG I'm reviewing here. Not having locator tabs is a nuisance at install, but really shouldn't be an issue during use. It just means install takes longer to align perfectly, and in use, there is the risk of the HG rotating on the barrel nut. That risk exists with my other HGs with locator tabs, but the risk is limited to slight shifts of a few degrees either way. This one could, in theory, rotate 360deg around under high stress. If it does, I'll figure out a way to pin it or it will go down the road in favor of a better option.
I gave this four stars. I debated between 3 and 4, and really this is a 3.5 star item, IMO. I rounded up because despite the shortcomings discussed above, it's not a bad piece of kit and right now it's at least relatively cost effective. Time will tell if it's durable under heavy use. I don't really have any immediate concerns, but time will tell. Off the cuff I don't think it's a top tier HG, but of course, it wasn't top tier pricing, either. I actually have a different HG from Optics Planet I was going to use on this build, but it's about a quarter inch too long to clear the can I want to put on the muzzle of my SBR, so I'm going to use it to build a different SBR upper for my dedicated SBR lower. That item isn't available in any shorter (8", maybe?) version. It has the locator tabs and is equally durable/comfortable, but this was the closest available part. I'd give the other guard 5 stars, as I've used it on other builds, but it just didn't fit the use case for this upper. This guard is almost as good, and fits the purpose. It's good kit but it's just not great kit, thus the four stars.
Pros:
- EASY INSTALL
- Smooth Finish
- comfortable grip
