Will Combs's Review of Bushnell AR Optics 1-4x24mm LPVO Rifle Scope, 30mm Tube, Second Focal Plane (SFP)

Bushnell sent me this scope when I sent in a discontinued model for service under warranty. While I do kinda miss the one I sent in, I must say this scope is pretty nice! It is on my 16" hunting AR15 chambered in 6.8mm SPC. It works wonderfully, and has stood up to the wear & tear of a number of trips.
My scope, a Bushnell AR71424I, is a FFP scope. It seems that Optics Planet has the AR71424I scope mislabeled as SFP. (I checked at a number of other webstores, and they have the AR71424I listed as FFP.) I very much like the very simple reticle, and the FFP feature is nice. No giant crosshairs, no "Christmas Tree" layout, just a circle with a dot and a few BDC hash marks. Very nice reticle design! It is strange that Bushnell has the subtensions in MOA, but the turrets adjust in MRAD.. but it's only a minor inconvenience. It's only a hassle during the zeroing process, and then once you're zeroed, just leave it alone.
The glass has a generous eyebox, and nice eye relief. Getting on target is super fast!
Included in the box are interchangeable "tips" for the zoom ring. It comes with the short tip installed, or you can swap it out for the large tip that's included, or you can go without either one. I like the short one, personally. The short one AND the long one both fold down to lay along the fat part of the scope near the shooter's eye, so they don't always stick way out when not in use. That's a cool feature, and one I wish was more common!
The illumination knob goes in alternating settings of "off - level 1 - off - level 2" and so on, to level 6. The level-6 brightness is BRIGHT, and I have no trouble seeing it even in bright sunlight. I usually shoot this rifle with the illumination either off altogether, or on lower brightness. Personally, I leave my brightness knob at the off setting between levels 3 and 4, so that I can use the illumination in twilight or just leave it off.
I think this optic is just about perfect for hunting applications. And that's how I use it, and I love it!
Pros:
  • Illuminated reticle
  • Generous eyebox
  • folding throw lever
Cons:
  • MOA reticle with MIL turrets
Best Used for:
  • hunting
