Most Helpful Positive Review Pretty good
This is a good value for the average person. It works very well for viewing critters at night. The IR light is surprisingly strong. I purchased a seperate IR flashlight at the same time rated to 125 yds. but the onboard IR light actually works much better and further. The battery life is also mu...

Most Helpful Negative Review Okay as a toy
I have to admit that my only background with night vision devices has been with later-generation goggles in the military. As such, my expectations and review criteria might be a bit different than some. I purchased this monocular for a camping trip, in the hopes of being able to watch woodland c...

Good starter NV

by zenmonger, from NC, United States Written on December 19, 2015
This is my first gen 1 monocular. I was sceptical about the quality because this was the cheapest thing out there, but it still got decent reviews, and it had the lowest magnification of all the ones in this low price range. I like that it uses common AA batteries. It is very lightweight, comes with a convenient lanyard to hang it around your neck, and it is simple to use. The field of view is somewhat narrow for 2X magnification, but the image is usable. I didn't want to have more magnification that makes it difficult to see what's happening at close ranges. Between the eyepiece diopter and the objective focus ring I was able to get fairly sharp images. It is not as powerful as I'd hoped for while not using the built in IF spotlight in near total darkness, but the IF illuminator is quite bright, though at distances less than 50 yards the IF beam is does not cover the full field of view; it becomes a clearly lit spot in the middle of the "frame". I also don't like that the IF illuminator gives off a visible red light when you look directly at it. Standing on my deck in what I considered total darkness, I was surprised how well I could see at short distances, and I was surprised to see my own shadow on the ground, which I realized was caused by the very small, dim led "on" indicator light on a security camera behind and above me. I haven't tried it yet, but the IR illuminator is so intense at less than 50 yards that I'm confident it will carry well out to over 150 yards, wh...

Good night vision

by Biochung, Verified Owner from HONG KONG, Hong Kong Written on October 24, 2015
Light weight is suitable for outdoor activities. I would like to use it for night diving in future. It was just as described. I could see in total darkness, the viewing field is somewhat small up close but it is sufficient to play around with. I could see my son who was lying down on the bed in total darkness. It is a fun monocular. By the way, small black spots were appeared on the viewing field during infra red illumination.

No buyer remorse here.

Just as described. Gen1 NV without having to take out a second mortgage. Looking forward to scouting with it. Finding my way to the stand in the a.m. should be faster, quieter and a lot less nerve-wracking.

Worth it for the money

by Legacy Reviewer, Verified Owner Written on April 25, 2013
The monocular will allow you to see in complete darkness using the IR light source. I live in a rural area and light gathering ability of the device is OK. You can see better at night with the device but keep in mind the image is Gen 1. I was prepared to return the device if I felt that the image was unusable but that was not the case. I can see my dog at night using the device whereas he is undetectable to the unaided eye. I think the monocular is worth the money...again it is a Gen 1 device and performs as expected.
Pros: Allows you to see in the dark
Cons: Image is Generation 1

compared 3 NV devices

by Legacy Reviewer, from WA, United States Written on September 18, 2012
Ordered this, Bushnell Stealthview II digital, and Yukon Ranger 5X digital. Kept this one. Unlike the digitals, this one has a starlight capability, which means you don't have to use the illuminator constantly. Eyepiece isn't best but you can adapt to it. Decent, affordable NV capability for SHTF. See other two devices for my review.
Pros: actually "starlight" usable, AA batteries(best for recharging), great value
Cons: eyepiece is like looking through a keyhole, visible IR, magnification is more like 1X

Night Watch Monocular

by Legacy Reviewer, Verified Owner Written on April 12, 2011
Though at first I thought I had a malfunctioning item and contacted Optics Planet for a return and refund, I discovered that it was I who was having the problem. A friend helped me to adjust the lens and now it works as it was intended. Optics Planet had agreed to send a free return shipping label - they were very cooperative, But I have kept the product and so enjoy using it. It is a godsend on a dark night when I hear something in our yard.

Pros: Can see well in very dark areas
Cons: It was difficult for me to adjust at first
