The longer eye relief is worth the size / weight gain

Written on Aug 15, 2021

The reason you would choose this sight over the much smaller and lighter 4x models is the longer eye relief. You may want that if you wear glasses, or have a rifle with a lower sight mounting position (Tavor for example) - or in my case, both. This sight is much more forgiving in that sense. Otherwise the optics are super clear and the reticle is very bright.

Fantastic Tavor Upgrade

Written on Aug 10, 2021

The OEM Tavor charging handle is a bit of a design mystery to me. It sticks out in your gear bag. It rocks a little but doesnt fold. And the shape is actually not all that comfortable to grip. Now if you own Tavor you know it likes a pretty deliberate racking, so a proper charging handle is functionally important beyond conveniences and cosmetics. This one works amazingly well, pleasant to touch, and provides great leverage for a strong rack. And once used it folds back flat.

Works well as a pair, expensive for what it is

Written on Aug 10, 2021

This is more of a perfectionist piece than a necessity as the OEM safety on Tavor works just fine and won't break anytime soon. And even if it does, it's $4.99 to get a new one from IWI. But the metal does feel nicer to operate on your $1700 rifle, so why not. The medium safety is exactly the same shape as the Tavor OEM one, except made of metal vs plastic. The slim one is less than half the depth. For me using the medium for the actual switching side, and the slim one for where the marker comes from the factory worked the best. If you use medium on the marker side it will dig into your hand, and if you use the slim on the switching side it will have too little leverage to operate reliably. Otherwise it's well made and installs easily.

The better Meprolight magnifier

Written on Aug 09, 2021

I ordered both this and the push-button versions of the Mepro magnifier and much preferred this one from the free play perspective. This one has almost none. Overall the optics are not bad, but better suited for dot type reticle vs. triangle. This is because towards the center of the lens there is almost no distortion, but as you move away there is both distortion and some ghosting. Which is undfortunate because you aim with the tip of the triangle, not the center. I found myself always trying to adjust my eye level, hunting for the spot where the tip would look clean. Also in my experience this magnifier worked much better with the taller Mepro Mor Pro than the more compact M21. While both are usable, the lower reticle position on M21 forces you into a very tight cheek squeeze in order to see the aiming point, which is not feasible for all situations. I much prefer the more relaxed chin position. Ultimately, while on paper the idea of a red dot sight with an option to magnify sounded attractive, I ended up going back to ACOG, which offered lightyears better optics in a less cumbersome package, while still supporting CQB aiming with both eyes open.

The best of Meprolight

Written on Jul 25, 2021

As you might expect, this sight is not the best at any one thing, but is a very compelling package with everything combined. Trijicons may have a better light collection and optics, Eotech may have better reticles, Holosun / Sig may have clever instant-on activation and ambient light sensors, but none offer a package this well put together - and running on AA batteries. I only wish they offered a triangle reticle like M21, but hey!

A very compelling package

Written on Jul 25, 2021

To me Mor Pro is the best Meprolight has to offer at the moment, and it's very compelling in general. As you would expect, the jack of all trades sight may not be the best in any one thing - fiber optic Trijicons may have better light collection, Eotech may have a better reticle, Holosun / Sig may offer instant-on motion activation, ambient light sensors, etc. But as a single package to fiber, LED and lasers, I cannot really complain. Outside the light collection is very adequate, and the green tinted lense makes reticle stand out more. Inside you will lose the reticle going off tritium and aiming into a light, but the switch is easy to flick and the LED is bright. Lasers are solid and no need to zero separately. Redundant batteries. Solid quick detach. My only wishes would be to offer a triangle reticle like the M21, and also would be nice to get the flash cover in the package... but hey!

Okay, not great

Written on Jul 23, 2021

Its pretty clear that creators of this sight were concerned with performance in bright sunlight. Because the 16 brightness settings range from insanely bright to very bright (1-3), and then suddenly drop into the NV mode (4). The submodes make some difference at the higher settings, but at the lowest are hard to tell apart. Bottom line, even on the lowest setting the reticle is way too bright for indoors, and unless I am aiming straight into a lit chandelier or sunlit window, there is quite a bit of reflection / blooming going on. Maybe this is more about lens coatings. I also have Trijicon, Holosun and Eotech sights, and they all offer much finer illumination control with far less ghosting and reflections (Trjicon, Holosun), or virtually no reflections (Eotech). It has to be noted that regardless of setting, there is zero light leak from the muzzle end even in full darkness.

Otherwise it works fine. Sturdy built, the mount is nice. AA battery support is definitely a plus. So if you really can't spring an extra $100-150 for Eotech, or want to get this for your Galil ACE for authenticity sake, this is not a terrible choice. Otherwise I felt like I could do better.
