Badger 35 mm rings

Written on Nov 18, 2025

Great first impression. They emboss the proper torque settings for both the base screws and rings on the top of the base.

Confusing depiction of 3-way Pilot/Chamfer trimmer

Written on May 29, 2018

I ordered a 6.5mm pilot for my RCBS three way pilot/chamfer case trimmer.

It had been several years since I had purchased the trimmer assembly with .224 and .308 pilots, and I had forgot how expensive they were. So I ordered the 6.5mm pilot thinking it was a pilot with complete sub-assembly.

When I received the pilot only I checked my order on line and was still confused about what I had ordered. I looked on Cabelas and Brownell websites and saw that the 3-way trimmer is much more expensive and I had indeed ordered just the pilot, not the trimmer and pilot.

OP is my go-too place for most optics and accessories but their website just has alot of generalized boilerplate text when it comes to reloading components. The OP website shows a picture of the trimmer with pilot to represent the pilot. Other websites show them separately and/or as related products which is what you would expect.

There is a mind Numbing variety of reloading components but OP should really take the time to link appropriate photos and descriptions (rather than boiler plate) for each product like other vendors do. This is a problem with their reloading dies also. I recently purchased Hornady match dies that come with a micrometer adjustment but the picture of the dies is shown without the micrometer seating stem. I had to call Hornady to confirm what came with the dies.

About the trimmer itself; it takes awhile to adjust all three cutting operations for each caliber which is why I purchased the se

Hornady Match dies with micrometer adjustment

Written on May 06, 2018

Hornady match dies come equipped with a micrometer adjustment which is not shown in the Optics Planet web page. the dies are well worth the money. The eliptical expander requires much less force to resize the neck than a standard ball which is also included in the kit. this was my first die with a bushing and it takes some research to determine which and how many to order. Forester supplies three appropriate bushings with their neck bushing dies and Hornady probably should too for the un-initiated. I was reloading for a 6.5 Creedmoor and selected .289, .290 and .291. Two were from RCBS (they are interchangable) and one from Hornady. Reding and Wilson bushings also reportedly fit the Hornady dies but not Forester which are longer. The micrometer adjustment is not as easy to read as a Forester but is very precise and comes with two stems, one for the popular Hornady ELD-M ogive and another standard one. the stems are not identified however but trying them soon sorted that out. And yes, you really can adjust to the 1/1000 of an inch, though on longer OCL oyu will have to unscrew the seating die quite a long ways. the match bushing dies are a baby step toward precision reloading. It offers precise seating depth and a variety of neck tensions but you will still need other tools to determine shoulder bump, neck thickness, a mandral press and die for really precise neck tension, and a neck turning tool and concentricity gauge for benchrest quality ammo.

30mm 1.125 inch High Ring Set

Written on Jan 27, 2016

I called Vortex prior to ordering these rings to confirm ring height since I was mounting a 6.5 x 24 x 50mm PST. But when they arrived my gunsmith told me they would be unecesarily tall for my Remington 40 X. He was correct. He mounted 20 MOA base I also ordered from OP first, then took my old Leupold rings which were std height and showed me they were adequate to clear the 50mm objective of my scope.

I have used NF rings in the past and they really, truly, do not need to be lapped. They are very strong and light weight. I recommend them to anyone, but listen to your gunsmith rather than Vortex about ring height. This is certainly not OP's problem, they delivered what I asked for. Just the wrong height.

I also purchased base, rings, scope and laser rangefinder from OP. Keep an eye out for discount codes, they pay off.

20 MOA base

Written on Jan 27, 2016

The 20 MOA base will raise the height of your scope so you may not need as high a set of rings as you thought. I prefer two piece bases since the one piece obscures so much of the magazine well and may interfear with ejection of spent cartridges. I needed to return the high rings I ordered for my 6.5 x 24 x 50mm objective scope and replace it with a std. height set of rings. Vortex recommended the high rings for their scope. My gunsmith says this is a common problem. I believe it. I ordered both scope, rings and bases from OP. They waited to send the base and rings until back ordered scope was in stock. Not a problem.
