Olight Baldr Pro Green

Written on Mar 12, 2023

There is A LOT of shade thrown at the Olight brand, for reasons I will not discuss here. I purchased one once directly from their website to form my own opinion, and thought it may have been acceptable for basic civilian use.

The Controls and overall construction feel nice initially, and it boast great feature especially at the price point. The laser is crisp and highly visible, but adjustment controls feel loose and sure enough the unit does not hold zero. Has bight, dim and strobe settings and be cycled right or left. lumen output is very high this both a good and bad thing, on one hand it will illuminate dark room quickly and would be highly disorienting at a potential aggressor, However pointing it near a wall or bright colored surface the spill is more disorienting to the user compared to other options with a lower output. The finish in coyote brown is a more of a dark brown that doesn't really match anything on the market. The anodizing appears to be a low grade and starts to wear of after moderate use. It is rated at IPX4 which is a low water prof rating for firearm mounted light. The throw leaver locking clamp mount and the tailcap design feel very weak.

At the range I discharged three rounds of .45 acp and the unit cut off, and would not turn back on consistently. It was sent back to Olight promptly under warranty, the response was the unit was "unrepairable" and Olight sent an Balder Pro R instead (similar product, different controls, rechargeable battery). Magpul Industries Enhanced Ejection Port Cover

Written on Jul 15, 2022

Generally I'm a big fan of Magpul and I have a habit of putting a lot of their accessories on my firearms. I was glad to hear they were making a polymer ejection port cover despite previously stating that they weren't going to make one. After getting my hands on one I'm sorry to say it's subpar compared to similar products on the market. The polymer feels thin, flimsy and likely to break on impact, compared to another similar polymer ejection port cover by Spikes Tactical that feels significantly more robust. Despite the use of polymer the bottom of the dust cover seems to be slightly too thick on the bottom that contains the spring bar. This causes the cover to not open properly on a variety of uppers (not only proprietary ones), I have a an Aero precision GI spec AR 15 upper and the dust cover will only open a few millimeters after pulling the charging handle. This is quite a shame, the cover itself looks good especially on builds that already have a lot of Magpul furniture on them. The self contained spring bar with a pull tab that doubles as the action spring is innovative. However my overall impression is this design was an afterthought and resulted in fitment issues. I ended up going back to the Spikes Tactical cover and this one ended up as a freebie for someone else. Hopefully Magpul does a Gen 2 in the future.
