Can't blame anyone but myself for the error but I got the wrong thread size. It was buried in the description and I just assumed I had ordered the 1/2x28 that I needed but really ordered the 1/2x36. So, not realizing I had the wrong size, I proceeded to screw the shroud onto the barrel by hand without any noticeable resistance to the threads being incorrect.
When I thought that the shroud was getting tight by hand, I used a strap wrench to get it tightened down even more. After cycling the rifle a few times, I could feel the shroud was coming loose. I realized that it was coming loose due to the threads being wrong. Since I tightened the shroud with a strap wrench, I knew that it was coming loose because the threads were stripped out.
My only complaint is I wish that I would not have been able to thread the device onto the barrel due to the thread difference and I almost feel like the threads are just very thin which allowed the device to thread with little resistance.Fast forward a bit...
So while Optics Planet did nothing wrong and I did not try to return the shroud, and the part was in perfect condition, I did reach out to GunTec just to let them know what my concerns were regarding being able to thread it on even though it was a different pitch. They did not even have to respond to me. Not only did they respond, but they offered to exchange the part I mistakenly ordered (and subsequently ruined) without batting an eye. What amazing customer service. Thanks Optics Plane
Can't blame anyone but myself for the error but I got the wrong thread size. It was buried in the description and I assumed when I ordered it for 9mm, it would be the right size. It was 1/2x36 and I needed 1/2x28. So, not realizing I had the wrong size, I was actually able to screw the shroud onto the barrel by hand without a noticeable resistance to the threads being incorrect.
When I thought that the shroud was getting tight by hand, I used a strap wrench to get it tightened down even more. After firing the rifle a few times, I realized the shroud was coming loose. I realized that it was coming loose due to the threads being wrong. Since I tightened the shroud with a strap wrench, I knew that it was coming loose because the threads were stripped out. The aluminum is the lower T6 and not 7075 so basically the shroud was ruined now.
My only complaint is I wish that I would not have been able to thread the device onto the barrel due to the thread difference and I almost feel like the threads are just very thin which allowed the device to thread with little resistance. Would've been a great looking device but did little to minimize flash or noise.
I only bought these because I could not get another version at the time I placed the order. They are a perfect fit and look nice but the pricepoint is not that great. Would buy again just wish they were cheaper.
Once you remove the mil-spec dust cover, this bad boy clicks right in. The spring loaded hinge makes it super easy to change out the dust cover. Color matches other furniture quite well. Would definitely buy again.
I believe other reviewers have also noted some of the same problems but I will re-iterate my problems just in case.
First off, the handguard feels like it is heavy duty and the paint matches the FDE of Magpul and other manufacturers. It is MLok and the openings fit various MLok attachments perfectly. The top rail seems a bit out of spec as getting sights mounted was tricky. The rail appears to be a bit too wide or the angle of the rail cut is off a bit the sights had to be tapped a bit to get them on.
The other bad thing is the handguard comes with a barrel nut and two screws to mount the handguard onto the nut. The problem is if you do not have a wrench to fit the barrel nut, Trybe did not include one like most others handguard makers do. The nut is 30mm and can be tightened down with an adjustable wrench but you will need to actually make sure the to use a proper wrench to get it torqued properly. The screws are hex and the handguard just slips onto the barrel nut and then gets tightened to it.
The other problem it has is there are no anti-rotation tabs on the handguard and I worry it might shift after time with usage and handling. Only time will tell I guess.
