... Vortex service

Written on May 07, 2021

The scope is great. The features are great.
The means to adjust the eye, reticle and target focus is great.
The glass offers undistorted, wide, and bright clarity.
The first one I got had obvious dirt inside, so I returned it and got another one. Plus points for Vortex customer service.
The second one is much better but has thousands of tiny particles, a fine dusting inside on the optics, which is only noticeable on the brightest of days and if you look for it. So the factory needs a clean, but the Solo itself it great. I have used it many times and the ranging feature is first rate after you learn how to use it.
I'd buy another, but check for dirty optics.

Very surprised

Written on May 06, 2021

I have to be honest and say that I bought this because it's cheap and I assumed lightweight, and a bit curious from an engineering point of view. It's $29, so when the receiver got here today I was not expecting much. Was I surprised! It looks great! Does not look like a polymer part. It looks like a quality finish found on forged uppers. The inserts are alloy of some kind, presumably 6061 and I thought of how you're supposed to tighten the barrel in. Sure enough the instructions make it clear to use a barrel extension mount, which makes sense. If you use a traditional outer clamp or other method to hold the receiver, you'll end up breaking something as I saw evident in another reviewer who clearly didn't bother reading the paperwork. Mine required a tiny bit of polymer to be filed off at the rear of the rear lug to seat perfectly (perfectly - zero movement!) on my PSA lower. So far, very impressed!

The good, the bad, and the ...OK

Written on Jul 30, 2018

I've wanted one of these for a long time and finally pulled the trigger and got one. I opened the box, took a look through the lens, and put it straight back in the box and found the return information. There was a big blob of dirt inside it, on one of the internal lenses. I called Vortex who were more than happy to help, but Optics planet sent me a return and ten days later, I had a replacement. Very simple quality control seems to have been missed at Vortex, it shouldn't have been made badly, and they should have caught it if it was. Enough about that.
The unit feels very solid and well made, the glass is very clear and the ranging reticle is great... IF you can hold it still! I gave it to one of my 25 year old employees as I thought he would have steadier hands, and he couldn't hold it still enough to read the scale either. So a rest or tree, or something may be needed to hold it still. It lives in my range/shooting bag. Very handy, very cool.. spoiled a bit by shoddy build control and bad quality checks.

Great option to the VLTOR

Written on Jan 31, 2018

I really wanted the VLTOR side mounted bipod, but couldn't get there with the price. UTG must have been watching, as the side mounted bipod is more stable than a bipod mounted from below, as the gun weight is more cradled between the legs than balanced on top. These are well made, well finished, of a reasonable weight and function well. My only one star loss, is that they require a tool to remove and can get in the way of your grip area or other rail mounted things like lights, when you fold them. Deployed, they lock in place well and provide a very secure shooting rest. Other colors would be good too.

Surefire Brake

Written on Jan 02, 2018

I've used these on a few rifles. They are simple and effective and a low profile, so you don't have a brake that's significantly wider diameter than your barrel. The vertical ports work very well in mitigating muzzle rise and the side ports make an effective brake, and in my observations, do not make side blast that's too offensive. This is not a flash hider and in bright sunlight, flash is easily seen. Comes with a crush washer and the sides do have flats for easier installation. Good quality coating and nicely machined.
