This radar chronograph ease of use is worlds above the optical type with the diffusers. You have to assemble these diffusers on sight and disassemble after use as they are rather fragile.
As well you have to be careful when firing to ensure the projectile/bullet passes between the diffuser rods to get a reading. As well, the chronograph itself has to be placed downrange of the shooting position exposing it to possible impact with a projectile.
The Rangecraft is a compact small device that you place beside your rifle on the shooting table or beside you with whatever thing you are trying to track velocity, just point it down range on its tripod and the device uses radar to deliver the velocity data to the device screen.
Price is 4 times that of the optical chronographs but very competitive compared to the comparable Garmin. In fact you see Garmin came out with an upgraded model to match the Athlon and their price is even higher than their original model.

Very light and compact; the “enclosed” reflex screen not only shields sunlight but protects the glass. I am mounting on a 188 series Ruger Mini-14 without the scope mounting therefore I am using a side mounted Picatinny rail. The sight does not come with a base mount so you have to acquire a DeltaPoint Pro footprint mount separately for your firearm. I got the Vortex Optics Red Dot Picatinny Mount DeltaPoint Pro.

Good heavy duty but the 1/2X20-3.5 bolts are too short to ensure good clamping on wider actions so recommend buying at least 4.5” bolts with flat washers and while your at it make sure they are grade 8 tensile strength!

These bullets are great for reloading military .303 British with the original FMJ profile and weight.
and used in a Lee Enfield.

I chose the Kestrel 5700 with the Hornady ballistics data as I shoot mostly Hornady cartridge's and reload Hornady bullets. For those that are into long range precision shooting this is an indispensable tool to hit the distant target in all weather conditions. The 5700 takes all environmental factors that exist at the shooting position and renders an elevation and wind correction for the shot. With the Hornady 4DOF option you can enter a vast number of their bullets that they have tested and actually shot so the user has an unprecedented amount of data to give you the best solution.
You download the Kestrel app to your phone and the 5700 with "LINK" will send the solution to your phone via Bluetooth. If you use their Rotating Vane Mount on a tripod, you can have the unit in a place near to record the current atmospheric conditions so you don't have to leave your shooting position to go and get a new solution as conditions change, primarily the wind.
I recommend going to Kestrel Ballistis.com to their "School House" section where they have a lot of videos to explain how to use the unit. The instructions that come in the box are just a quick start and are very vague and even if you down load their instruction sheet it leaves a lot of questions.

I was searching for a Dangerous Animal/Grizzly Bear defense cartridge while hiking/camping/ hunting in the back country. Carrying in a chest rig is unobtrusive way to pack and easy to deploy in an emergency where you will have little or no warning during a grizzly bear attack.
