I wanted to like these........

Written on Feb 21, 2017

30 years ago, I used a pair of Steiner Marine binoculars with the built-in compass, while doing work for the Navy. They were spectacular; clear, 3-dimensional-type view, just perfect in every way. Based on that experience long ago, I wanted another pair of Steiners. Optics Planet got me a super deal on the P1050's and shipped them out. The clarity, brilliance and quality is still there, even with a much less expensive optic, but the downfall of these binoculars for me was the "sports-auto-focus." Steiner claims that a one-time adjustment of both diopters is all that's needed to use these binoculars at any distance, I presume, because of their inherent, extreme depth of field. In all fairness, I'm 64 and have astigmatism, but there is no auto-focus for my eyes. After adjusting for 50 yards and trying to re-focus (my eyes) for 100 yards, it ain't happening. I had to re-adjust both diopters to bring the field of view back into focus. Perhaps younger eyes can do this automatically but for me, I need a traditional central focus adjustment that moves both lenses. These binoculars just don't work for me but may for someone else. As always, Steiner quality is there, OP was great with the return but the Nikon Monarch 5's with the traditional center focus adjustment ended up being my replacement binoculars.
