Simplicity

Written on Sep 16, 2023

Blackhawk has a simple and effective design on this mattress holster, contingent on a couple of factors. One factor is the mattress and box spring application. They’re not all equal, so some may lack the necessary weight and contact surfaces necessary to maintain a good grip to stay put when pulling the weapon. Non slip strips are on the product, but perhaps hook and loop combined with 6” additional length to help ensure proper anchoring and stability.

The holster portion is rugged material with simplistic tapered strap design to accommodate wide range of pistols. Several of my handguns have a fairly prominent front site and on the pull, it snags significantly. My Staccato C2 wasn’t too bad, but my CZ Shadow 2 was nearly impossible to pull and my Walther PPQ with upgraded sights requires a specific tilt motion to alleviate the “snag”. The two in the morning, dead sleep, thump in the night scenario is not a premium moment to have an access delay.

I would like to see a merger of products to fill this need. I happen to be a big fan of the neoprene pocket holsters out on the market. They are simple, minimalist, effective designs that do the job for my carry application. A neoprene pocket holster with a Velcro means to attach to a well designed mattress anchor would be optimal, IMO.

Bottom line: This Blackhawk mattress holster should work great on some applications, with the right mattress, weapon size and configuration. It will not really accommodate a weapon mounted

Rise is on the rise

Form, function and enduring reliability have always been my driving priorities as a consumer. I admit that I’m not qualified to make an assessment on the endurance and reliability, so I’ll focus on design and performance here. I believe Rise Armament has succeeded on these elements into their trigger line at a very competitive price point. With this OPMOD edition, it’s appearance is sharp with one small disappointment. I was expecting the red trigger to be an anodized aluminum appearance, with that nice red “pop”. Instead, it was simply a dark red paint. A minor issue, but considering the great looking drop-in housing won’t be seen, the visible trigger is the the show. It’s a successful marketing hook that works on consumers like me. Appearance is more than superficial. It also shows the attention to fit and finish detail. The beveling and well thought fine cuts lend toward quality indicators. Rise has payed close attention on these finer points. At this price, it’s impressive that they have put the established trigger brands on their heels. Okay, so enough on the visuals. Does it perform? I’m giving it a qualified YES! Again, I’m not a 3-gun competitor, nor do I chew through a thousand rounds a week. I’m very much into builds and accumulation. This is my fifth Rise trigger, and all perform very close to stated specs including this OPMOD edition. I run trigger gauge checks on all with no less than 10 measured pulls and these products don’t disappoint in take-up
