Strong steel, weak handle and fittings
Written on Nov 27, 2014
Review for
Cold Steel Chinese Sword Breaker
Good: strong, straight blade, almost flawless. Tight scabbard.
Bad: warped fittings, cracked handles, very poor quality here. The point of blade body was chipped. Balance point above 5 inches. More suited as two handed wield unless you are the incredible hulk.

Poor quality control

Review for
Cold Steel Battle Gim Sword
Cold Steel has very poor quality control. I heard a vendor kick back 40% of their Cold Steel products due to defect. This item from OpticsPlanet is no different. The wood is badly shaped, metal wires protruding from handle cutting your palm, fittings are crooked on the handle, and loose on the scabbard from what appears to be a rush job. The blade edge is bent at the base.

Good, bad, and ugly

Cold Steel Battle Gim Sword
Good:
Great blade. Robust and well patterned Damascus. Thick and built like a tank.
Bad:
Agility is diminished due to balance issue. Made for chopping, not slicing.
Ugly:
Quality control on everything else but the blade. Loose fittings, splintered handle, wires protruding from handle to cut your palm, handle wood not filed down, and not aligned well with guard. Wood is light colored, striped, and cheap looking unlike the deep rosewood in picture. The hole where tassel goes through has a small fitting that falls off sometimes. I bought 3 of these from Optics Planet and all three have serious problems for a sword that is MSRP at $800.
