DeSantis Quality

Written on Jun 04, 2016

Another good DeSantis holster. I chose this model to carry my 1911 in the field and so I wanted something with positive retention. The three slots also allow both strong-side and off-side carry and I normally carry this off-side. The gun rides high and tight on either side.

Good Rig with one Glaring Problem

Written on Apr 10, 2015

Bought this for my 1911 primarily for field wear rather than concealed carry. I have a an Uncle Mikes Hunting Shoulder rig for a TC Contender but much prefer this shoulder holster. I may even replace the Uncle Mikes with one of these for the Contender.
The holster is comfortable to wear, holds the pistol securely including "cocked and locked" condition, and fairly concealable if you want that.
the Only reason I didn't rate 5 stars is the utterly useless rail mounts on the off-side tie-down. You can not find a mag holder that will go on a rail. it would be far more useful to have just loops or maybe MOLLE attachment loops. It is difficult to get the rail mounts off as well. Just a Glaring Error in design.d

Good Scope but Diminishing Returns per Dollar

Written on Sep 06, 2014

This is a Leupold scope and is well constructed as are all Leupolds.
Comparing this against a Leupold VX-1 it replaced, the clarity and resolution is better but not stunningly so. Compared against a VX-2 very little difference. That probably says as much about the lower-priced Leupolds as it does about the VX-3. For low-light use all of them are usable down to most legal shooting hours anyway.

You do get the twin-bias erector assembly and that is a good thing especially for heavy-recoiling calibers.

The scope cover provided with the VX-3 is cheesy. Gets in the way cleaning and picks up solvents. I much prefer the simple bikini covers that come with the other lines.

Got the CDS option for this. I suppose it will be useful. But I have been trying to contact Leupold to get a dial and I refuse to spend an hour on hold. Why they can't provide a simple Web-based order-entry form is a mystery. It's not rocket science it's just ballistics. If you buy this scope in September to hunt with it in October good luck. First you have to get customer support then wait 6 weeks to get the dial. There must be some little old guy with a jewelers' lope tuck in his eye engraving the dials.
