Love my Aluminas

Written on Jan 09, 2017

A very clever design by Leupold. While they may appear gimmicky they are not at all. A high quality design for protecting your glass by keeping snow, water, dirt or tree branches away from the glass. The flip up lens covers operate off a spring loaded design making them pop up quite well. They thread very well into the scope themselves which are pre threaded to accept the lens covers. You need to remove the standard rubber eye piece that comes with your Leupold scope before installing the lens cover but its an easy change over.

One caveat to the install is depending on how low you mount your scope to your barrel, it is best to install the lens covers BEFORE mounting your scope as you may not have enough clearance between the objective and barrel to screw the objective cover on.

I have a set on all my Weatherby's if that says anything. My only complaint about them (and this is nothing against design or quality of build) is they are not very friendly when walking through thick, spiderweb evergreen forest in bear country as the open lens covers are susceptible to damage. However, under MOST normal hunting conditions, this will not be a factor.

I highly recommend.

Solid Rings

Written on Jan 09, 2017

Quality rings with good machining. A good choice for lower caliber to higher caliber and magnum round rifles. I recommend mounting the rings to Dual Dovetail bases rather than standard bases as you avoid the windage screws found on the standard rings as it's one more unnecessary moving part. Fairly easy to mount to the bases (with the right tools) but my best advice is to purchase a Leupold ring wrench for proper mounting to avoid damaging the rings. Screws come pre treated with blue lock tight (thread lock) which is a nice additional feature. For best results, properly torque the screws.

I know this is a review about the rings but I rate this a 4 out of 5 star as the rings are nothing without bases and I forewarn Weatherby owners the DD bases made for Weatherby Mark V are not properly compatible for elevation alignment with Weatherby Mark V, 6 lug rifles. The bases fit the Mark V fine but the elevation is not correct for 6 lug rifles.

Leupold VX-6 is a great scope

Written on Jan 07, 2017

Leupold VX-6 is a great value where you truly get what you pay for. I shot my first elk with my 3-18x50 from 440 yards in the mountains of Montana. At full zoom the target was clear and crisp with no visible color fringing or softness in the lenses. Optical quality and functionality is outstanding and Leopold backs up their scopes with a lifetime warranty setting the mind at ease that your investment is covered. A rugged build with dials that function very crisp as you'd expect. The turrets are not unusually high and function quite well ergonomically. Additionally when you purchase a VX-6 with CDS (custom dial system) you get one free custom dial built to the ballistics of your rifle and ammo which is very helpful for long range shooting to avoid hold over. I loved my 3-18x50 so much I purchased a second. Best used with Leupolds Dual Dovetail bases and rings.
