Installed on a Ruger RPR 338LM

Written on Dec 08, 2023

Installation was a piece of cake, took longer to get the old stock off, then to put this one on. It is longer and heavier than the RPR stock. This may be an issue if you’d like a shorter pull.

Excellent product

Used deer hunting on a Ruger 338 Lapua magnum. Held the weight and worked great.

Good replacement for the plastic shroud

Written on Dec 08, 2023

Replaced shroud on a 338LM. Definitely heavier than the stock plastic shroud. Managed to overrotated when removing the old shroud, and had to reset the locking cams. If this happens to you, don’t panic it’s an easy fix. You just have to rotate the locking cams into the appropriate position to fit in the receiver. It takes some amount of force, but it will click into the proper place when the cams are reset.

Does the Job

I was looking for a thermal for a Colt 6920. I wanted something with more eye relief like a reflex sight as opposed to a "rifle scope". I ordered a different product initially, but it had eye relief issues, a mouse print screen menu, cryptic instructions and questionable quality control (the impact point was way off center indicating the sensor or base were misaligned etc. It just seemed to be a cobbled together product that actually cost a lot more money. I returned that product and decided to skip that vendor).

I picked up the Echo3 which was cheaper by several hundred dollars. The one button function/menu options are so much easier than the other product (searching through mouse print menus on the screen). It's easy and intuitive to change zoom settings, reticle selection or color palate. The eye relief is what I was looking for, more of a reflex sight without needing reading glasses. The 30 mhz refresh rate is not an issue for my uses, (targets 50-100 yards. As another reviewer said, you're not going to 'clear a room' with it. It's powered by two CR123's (as opposed to a rechargeable battery the other unit had). For me, this is a plus as replacement CR123's are easy to come by where an AC source for the charger may not. For me it is easier to have a few extra throw away batteries than have to recharge. As far as fit and finish, no issues. Weight and size are similar to my Eotech. A really nice feature is the automatic 'hibernate mode' if the rifle is not moved after a c

Not impressed, questionable quality control.

Overall, this is not a bad unit but it is one serious issue. The impact point is nowhere near center, being about 1/3 of the way to the right and 1/3 of the way down on screen. Either the base plate is misaligned, or the sensor itself. (Later today, I’m going to contact the manufacturer). The screen menu system is mouse print, very small. Difficult to see with any kind of background light. There is no contrast control which would help, only only five brightness settings. The instructions about the menu system are cryptic it best. The Picatinny mount has no security lock and there is no lens cap for the sensor. The pros are good thermal resolution, and the unit seems to hold zero pretty well in spite of being nowhere near the center of the screen. I’ve been using thermals for about 10 years, I thought this unit would be good for “point and shoot” instead of a rifle scope. It’s good for that, but be aware that for your eye to focus, the unit has to be away from your eye, either mounted further down the rifle or holding the rifle away from your face.

RPR Lapua trigger

Written on Oct 05, 2023

It’s a little different for the Magnum rifle than online videos which are for the standard rifle. A couple of parts need to be switched over so it’s not a true “drop in”. No big issue to do. Straight forward, works as advertised.

Fusion, pricy but if you have the money…

I got Pulsar’s entry thermal unit for a rifle and was so impressed I decided to try the Fusion monocular. The thermal portion is amazing for spotting wildlife, even mice. You can also change the color of the thermal image, there are many choices, but for night work I like the view with a red ‘cast’ to it. During the day I use the grayscale default (useful for finding chipmunks and squirrels for my dog to chase. The little critters show up like lightbulbs in the woods). The digital is ok for IDing deer gender after picking them up with the thermal. The resolution is pretty good, but the output is black and white, color would have been great. I think that is the next model they are working on. The illuminator for digital imaging has three levels. It functions like a bright spotlight and gives clear images out to about 150 yards. The downside to this is the ground or any brush in the foreground ‘whites out’ which makes it more difficult to see distant targets. Without the illuminator, depending on ambient light, the image can be grainy. The illuminator causes a visible red glow on the front of the unit. I chase this model for the longer range but I would have bought the less visible, shorter range model. The ‘fusion’ aspect is more of a gimmick, (kind of like a bad acid trip, weird colors and shades as it overlays a smaller thermal image over the digital). I haven’t found fusion real useful. The real beauty of the unit is having thermal and digital in one and being able to quick

Works ok no issues

Written on Sep 07, 2021

Not sure if it’s better than an adjustable gas block but fit and finish seems fine and it works with the can. Place this on an M4 and it worked right out of the box. The only issue is an optics planet is a little behind on their orders.
