Crisp Images and Solid-build Body

Written on Feb 08, 2016

Bought from OP in December 2015 after a three-year search and comparison. As a frequent birder, all the way want a no-fancy spotting scope of 80-82mm diameter yet not too pricey. Compared brands commonly used by fellow Hong Kong birders, those typically from Japan, Austria, Germany etc, with prices from USD400 to USD2800. After searching websites on spotting scopes, I finally landed on the mid-priced Vortex 85mm Razor during OP's seasonal sale.

Over the past two months, test-used the Vortex under at least 5 different weather conditions and hours. Overall I am very satisfied with the lens performance and ease of use. Images stand out conspicuously under strong sunlights in the mid-day despite not used during rainy times:
(i) cloudy with some shower - image not particular sharp, felt some distance from the objects at over 50x magnification
(ii) late afternoon one hours before sunset - images a bit blur
(iii) clear noon time - very sharp images and excellent colour rendition
(iv) hazy day (pollutants) - not particularly sharp and colour appeared paler. Fellow said chromatic aberration to be improved. Also saw halo around the image frame.
(v) early morning - perfectly fine

The fine adjustment knob is sensitive and can in fact be used to replace the coarse one. 20-60x eyepiece is good enough despite a 40X one (if any) would be fantastic to come with. FOV is wide enough to appease me. It is set on a sturdy 4-leg tripod with 28mm diameter for stability.

Clear and Sharp

Written on Nov 15, 2015

As a frequent birder, I used three brands of binos, two of which popular Japanese models of same price range. After two years I have finally landed on Legend 10x42 HD that I have been using Legend HD for some months now, sometimes in foggy and showering weather conditions up in the mountains.
With its extra-low dispersion HD lens, Legend gives clear and sharp views on even objects across the slopes and under tree branches. Colour rendition tends to stand out more for red, which could just be a merit when coming across sunbirds or flowerpeckers. The weight at 700gms is ok and neck strap is included.
The only thing was that I lost my object lens cap and one eyecup came off. The former troubled me some time to find replacement and the latter can be rectified simply with glue.
And, quick international shipment direct from OpticsPlanet too despite no hurry usage for a new Legend.
