The Cadillac of Lens Covers

Written on Dec 25, 2020

I own three Leupold scopes, all bought used, and none came with lens covers. So, I did what many others do, I bought aftermarket plastic lens covers with rubber slip-on boots. They serve their intended purpose, but have drawbacks, like the plastic covers easily popping open when the scope is bumped. So, this year I decided to try Leupold's Alumina Flip-Back lens covers. All I can say is that they are worth every penny! First, they are made of metal, not plastic and you will see and feel the quality the moment you open the package. Unlike the plastic covers with large rubber sleeves, these are sleek, thin, and very strong. The fit is perfect. They screw into the threaded eyepiece and objective and the outer diameter of the lens cover ring matches exactly to the outer diameter of the eyepiece or the objective end of the scope. The flip-back cap is on a ring that freely rotates around a threaded collar. As you screw the threaded collar into the scope threads, it also snugs down on the rotating ring just enough that it stays wherever you want to set it, but allows enough play that you can still turn the ring if you want to change the position of the cover when you flip it open. So, you can set this lens cover to open in any direction, 360 degrees. When closed, unlike the plastic lens covers, these stay closed using magnets on the objective and a thumb latch on the eyepiece. Caution – these only fit scopes made after 2004. You won’t regret buying these lens covers.
