I have owned and used a number of dot optics, starting with the Riton Tactix MPRD on a Glock 43x and a cheap ($60) "Creative XP" that surprisingly worked reliably. Along the way, I began to use the green dots as they were easier for me to see. I've used optics from Swampfox and Cylee with good results.
When looking for an optic, I now have several criteria:
1. Green dot
2. Auto on (shake to wake)
3. Auto dimming
4. Top access for battery
5. Cost not an arm and a leg
The Spike meets all of these except for the top mount battery. It's my go-to now when I need an optic for a narrow slide.
I used the Spike on a Taurus 24/7 converted from 40 S&W to 10mm. The Taurus is an oddball in that while it is a large bore, the slide especially at the top is narrower than a Glock 20/21, which uses an RMR width plate. The optic has held up through many magazines. I purchased a second one for a 9mm G48 project and never followed through on it. I replaced the Riton with that optic and like it a lot better.
The older models of the Taurus 45s used a narrower slide at the top. I found the RMR type was too wide, so I shopped for an RMSc solution, which is a good fit. My criteria were as follows:
1. Green dot
2. Auto on (shake to wake)
3. Auto dimming
4. Top access for battery
5. Cost not an arm and a leg
I looked at several, and ended up with this one, since it met 3.5 of the 5 criteria (no auto dimming). I rated it down one star since it would be better to have a dot only option vs the huge circle and a dot. I use the ADE Spike on other pistols, and it meets 4/5 of the criteria, but has a bottom battery.
Now for operational use. I have run many magazines of both 45 ACP through the NUWA Pro and using the same frame, a lot of 10mm through a rechambered 40 caliber slide using the Spike optic. I have not had any failures from either optic. I own several ADE optics and have not had any problems with them. I'm hoping their new solar power optic will have a green option.
I'm building one-off custom guns based on the Glock 30 and 29. One (30) is 45 ACP and the other (29) is 10mm. To do this, I'm combining a G30 slide (I have a Gen 3 and a Gen 4 slide) onto a custom G21 shortened frame. The G30 went together well with a LWD G21 barrel cut to length and custom length recoil spring, and it runs beautifully.
The 29 was a different story. The slide will not go onto the frame unless the slide lock is pulled down- this is a barrel issue. I can't get it to chamber a round out of the mag- the setup uses 10mm specific parts in the slide and also an OEM G20 mag. I pulled the barrels and looked at them closely. A picture would be worth 1K words, but I don't see a way to attach one. The enlarged portion for the chamber is slightly shorter on the Trybe barrel. The forward lug is also offset slightly forward. Since I've cut this to length, I can't return it. When I was able to chamber a round, the bullet did come out of the barrel when I pulled the trigger, so that part was OK. :)
These barrels should work in a G21 setup, but for some reason this one doesn't. It may have worked OK in a G20. Since that was not my application I can't properly rate it, so I'm giving it a neutral 3/5 stars.
