Magpul Padded MS1 Sling

Written on Sep 17, 2016

The padded version of the Magpul slings are great for heavier long guns. This one is installed on my Benelli M-4, and the additional padding is a huge bonus toward the end of a long day. The padding segments are separated into smaller individual compartments instead of consisting of one long padded section as is the case in most other padded slings. This, combined with the material that Magpul uses on all of their slings, makes the sling feel like it's already broken in on day one. It doesn't feel as stiff as most other slings, yet it seems to be holding up well to several runs through the O Course (climbing over barricades, etc.) and numerous SWAT callouts where we're especially hard on our gear.

I also like the quick-adjustment buckle. Instead of trying to feel for a dangling strap while wearing gloves, I just run my hand down the sling until it reaches the quick adjustment slider. It's much more intuitive under stress than trying to find a dangling strap in a hurry.

I'm impressed!

XS Big Dot Tritium

Written on May 18, 2016

Yes, I strongly recommend the Big Dot Tritium. The Big Dot is pretty large. It jumps out at you immediately during daytime use and also works effectively during reduced light shooting with its tritium glow. Probably would not recommend this for 25+ yard hunting with slugs or for any other application where longer range accuracy is essential since the dot covers such a large area of the target, BUT this is ideal for buck shot and/or closer range slug use.

SureFire Mini Scout Weapon Light w/Z68 Switch

Written on Sep 01, 2015

This light is perfect for a 14.5 inch and smaller M-4 platform. Plenty of light output for a 100 yard target identification at night. Typical SureFire bulletproof construction and reliability. Saved money by ordering this model that does not include the potentially problematic remote pressure switch.

I ALSO Got One With Defective Side Rails

Written on Apr 21, 2015

Although I've had this rail system for a few months, I just had an opportunity to mount it to my Benelli M4 a few days ago. Much to my disappointment, my Larue Offset Scout Light mount will NOT attach to either the right or left side rails (3:00 and 9:00 positions). Instead of using the $100+ Larue quick detach Offset Scout Light Mount like I have on all of my other Picatinny railed long guns, my only apparent option is to use the basic SureFire screw on cross-bolt mount that was originally supplied with the Scout Light.

To ascertain if this could be a Larue mount issue instead of a problem with the new SureFire rail system, I attached the Larue to the Picatinny rails mounted on several other rifles. The Larue mount fit fine on all of those in every possible mounting position. As I continued troubleshooting this problem, I also tried to mount three other identical Larue quick detach Scout Light mounts on this new SureFire Benelli M4 rail. Same results! The rail's 3:00 and 9:00 positions will not accept the Larue mount. It seems pretty apparent that the side rails on my brand new SureFire Benelli M4 rail system are NOT in spec.

I just discovered that another Optics Planet reviewer has also experienced the same issue as mine. His review was posted over one year ago. However, a more recent OP reviewer said that his rail system worked fine. I'm not sure what the explanation is, but I do know that this is not a typical example of the quality I've come to expect from

Troy Rear Folding Battle Sight

Written on Mar 14, 2015

Troy Folding Sights are built like a tank! Since this is installed on a work rifle that rides in a vertical mount, it's easy to bang metal clipboards and other potentially-damaging equipment into these things while it's inside the vehicle. Likewise, when my patrol rifle is out of the vehicle and actually being used for its intended purpose, the rifle and its various mounted components are subjected to lots of abuse. Although the optic that sits above this folding sight looks worse than the Troy Folding Rear Sight, the sight has also managed to take on a "broken in" appearance.

I keep it in the "folded" position and just use it as a backup to supplement my optic, but it still lives a pretty rough life. The coating has scraped off of it in several places, and I noticed a small dent in the metal when I was at the range last week. I'm not sure exactly when I hit the sight against something hard enough to gouge the metal, but it didn't seem to affect the integrity of the sight. I removed the optic, did a quick 100 yard check with only the folding sights, and it was still spot on!

Troy, you've got a winner with these!

DeSantis Super Fly Holster for S&W J Frame

Written on Oct 22, 2014

This is a very good pocket holster for the price. It works well covering the outline of the gun, and it remains in the pocket when drawing the weapon. One reviewer complained that it shifts around in the pocket and follows the gun out of the pocket during the draw. That may very well be the case if your pockets are very large and/or very loose, but I'm not sure that I would use that as a reason to give this holster a poor review.

I frequently carry either a J Frame or small semi-auto pistol in my pocket as an "on duty" back up gun as well as when I'm just going to make a quick trip to the corner store while off duty. If your pockets are too large, it will be difficult for any pocket holster to maintain traction when you draw the weapon. Conversely, if your pockets are too tight, any pocket holster will print. The material used in this holster has always done a great job adhering to the inside of my pocket. I just know that some pants/shorts are going to work better than others when I carry concealed in my pocket instead of inside the waistband, which is my preferred concealed carry method the majority of the time.

A-Zoom Revolver Snap Caps, .38 Special

Written on Oct 19, 2014

Whenever I'm working with our officers who carry a S&W J Frame or other short-barrel revolver as their back up gun or off duty weapon, we always incorporate "rapid reloading" instruction and drills into the training. Speed strips and/or speed loaders, combined with quality snap caps, facilitate the development of muscle memory without the risk of a negligent discharge. Over the 30+ years I've spent as a military and law enforcement firearms instructor, I've identified A-Zoom snap caps as the best made and longest lasting brand available.

Just About Perfect!

Written on Oct 08, 2014

The Safariland ALS line of holsters comes pretty close to perfection for off duty carry. Although the 6378 holsters are not quite "low profile" enough for absolute concealment, their combination of weapon security and quick access from the ALS feature have created a top of the line holster series. The thumb break is intuitive, and my "in uniform" duty holster simply adds the SLS hood to the ALS feature for an easy transition between the two. As opposed to other types of security holsters, the ALS feature keeps my trigger finger where it's supposed to be - away from the trigger. Since the introduction of the ALS line a few years ago, I've picked up these holsters from Optics Planet for almost all of my off duty handguns.
