Purchased the scope for my mid 1970's Remington 700 BDL in .30-06. Using Tally extra low mounts (highly recommened for this installation) I found that the lencth of the 1" diameter tube is borderline for the .30-06 long action (any miss-alignment effects the ability to turn the variable power ring). I am sure that this scope would be a much better fit for a short action like that of a .308. I plan and recommend lapping the rings in the hope of further loosening the variable power ring's operation.
I like the scope (I also have a Leupold 3-9 that works with the extra lows, but just find it too much since I never plan shooting anything small or beyond 500 meters). That's why I am willing to take the time to get this scope fitted better. A simpler long action alternative might be to mount a Leupold fixed 4x, but that does take away some flexanility.
