Remington 22 Thunderbolt Rimfire .22 LR 40 Grain

Written on Mar 09, 2025

Great ammo. Bought to use in my Ruger SR22 and Mark IV. This ammo cycles well in both of these and holds a good group. With the Mark IV fitted with a Vortex Viper 6MOA red dot, I can achieve a 2 inch group at 25 yards using a rest.

Winchester Wildcat .22 Long Rifle 40 Grain Lead Round Nose Brass Cased Rimfire Ammunition

Written on Mar 09, 2025

I have shot Winchester Wildcat for years. The older version with the orange and red label is what my Ruger SR 22 liked preferred. This latest batch does not match the quality or consistency of the past.

Defender CCW for Ruger American Pistol Competetion

Written on Feb 02, 2025

Just got the Defender CCW 3 moa mounted on my Ruger American Pistol Competition model. It fits great and wanted to pass on what I did for other Ruger American Pistol Competition owners. I was replacing an older Vortex Viper Red Dot and wanted a Red Dot with the auto on/off/awake features. I looked at the Defender ST and XL but their foot prints were to long so I decided to try the CCW.

I removed the optic mount cover plate and the two alignment pins. That allows the Defender CCW to sit in the machined slot for the optics. I talked with Vortex Support and they confirmed that you don't have to use the alignment pins for securing the optic to the slide and that the two mounting screw's will be fine. The Vortex Defender CCW fits snug to the front of the factory machined optic slot with space behind the glass. I used the 1 degree plastic shim so the CCW wouldn't need as much elevation adjustment. The provided 6 x 48 x 9mm long screws were a little short, so I purchased from a local Ace Hardware 6 x 48 x 10 mm long gun machine screws to mount the CCW. The provided 6 x 48 x 9 mm screws only had a few threads showing with the shim and CCW optic stack up.

I have dry fired a couple hundred times and and live fired 50 rounds. So far the Defender CCW is holding steady.

Vortex Viper 1x24 mm 6 MOA Red Dot Sight, Black

Written on May 07, 2024

I purchased this Vortex Viper 1x24 mm 6 MOA Red Dot Sight for a Ruger American Pistol, 9mm competition model. It fits like a glove on the machined slot of the slide. I have shot over 1000 rounds since installing the Vortex Viper and it has held its position. I wanted a lower profile Red Dot so I could still use/have access to the original iron sights on the pistol and have the benefits of the Red Dot sight and the Viper fit the bill. For the distances I shoot, a dot size of 6 MOA was best and I like the 10 brightness levels. I use one of the lower dot light levels at the indoor range or when I am dry fire training at home as that also gives me the smallest dot size with my astigmatism, but I can use the brighter levels when shooting outside. I am okay with having to remove the Red Dot to change the battery because at the brightness levels I use, I should get around 20,000 to 30,000 hours of operation before that is needed.
Vortex as a company has been great to work with. I contacted them to see about buying an extra rubber cover for the Viper and they sent me one at no charge! Thank you, Team Vortex.

ADE Advanced Optics Mini Red Dot Sight Mount Base, Ruger SR22 Pistols, Black, Ruger SR22 Plate

Written on May 03, 2024

I purchased the ADE Advanced Optics Mini/Micro Reflex Dot Sight Mounting Plate for a Ruger SR22. I do not recommend this mounting plate for the SR22. The base or tail of the dovetail on the mounting plate is much smaller than the socket of the dovetail grove in my SR22 slide. This allowed for a noticeable gap between the base of the mounting plate and slot in the slide. The problem is the mounting plate/Red Dot pivots forward/aft/up/down over the set screws of the mounting plate in the slide. The mounting plate/Red Dot would not hold its position and no way to sight in the Red Dot. I contacted ADE Advanced Optics and they recommended to place a shim between the slide dovetail socket and the dovetail base of the mounting plate; a 0.013" shim was required.

After 200 rounds and not being able to group my shots, even at 5 yards, I removed the mounting plate from my Ruger SR22. I was also not comfortable with the lack of mating surface area between the dovetails of the mounting plate and the slide. I measured the width of the mounting plate dovetail base and SR22 slide dovetail socket. The mounting plate dovetail base is 0.520" and the dovetail socket in my SR22 slide is 0.530". I think this was allowing the mounting plate and red dot to continue moving, even with the shim and set screws tight.
