Surprisingly Good for the Price
Written on Oct 28, 2015
As a retired military member who's been building my own AR-15s about 5 years, I took a chance and ordered a tan VISM L2 box from Optics Planet on a whim. I was impressed with the construction--it doesn’t feel “airsofty.” Of course I wouldn't put it up against pricey mil-spec laser illuminators such as a PEQ-15 or DBAL, but it's superior to the Asian airsoft replicas of those boxes. I think this product fits into a niche somewhere between those extremes (leaning toward the lower end). The specifics: it’s tiny, but the metal case seems sturdy. The built-in rubberized switches are responsive and provide good tactile feedback. I haven’t used the tape switch yet, but it feels a little less responsive. In overall length it will take up about 8 Picatinny rail slots. The adjustable QR rail mount seems solid and the lever locks down securely. The tan color is a fairly good match for Flat Dark Earth. The Owner’s Manual is well-written in English. Now for the business end: the 5mW green laser is very bright for its size. In sunny daytime conditions, I’ve found it easily visible on a paper target at 25 yards, but just barely visible at 50 yards. Very good visibility anywhere indoors. I dropped a dab of threadlock around the laser adjustment screws, and it has held zero shooting about 50 rounds of .223 so far. The 4-color NAV lights work fine but are dim and seem like more of a novelty for an average Civ user. Honestly, the only real design criticism I have is the lack of a master on/off
