It is worth every penny

Written on Feb 27, 2019

The review format is quite limiting, so I’ll try answer the questions that I had while buying Trijicon thermal optics.

Q: Is the image as clear and as crisp as they show in advertising videos?

Yes, it is. Up to me it is even better than in most demos that I saw before purchase. If it is not, the device may have a problem. Thanks to OpticsPlanet, such problem can be easily resolved. That’s my personal experience.

Q: Is it worth to waste that much money comparing cheaper devices?

Yes, it is. I also have EOTech’s 320x200 thermal monocular and… They simply cannot be compared. EOTech is practically good to distinguish the heat source of a man or deer size at distances up to 100-150 yards or to detect heat insulation problems. Trijicon is a true VISION device. It is sensitive enough to recognize a paper IPSC or IDPA target on the basement drywall (not easy task for a thermal device!). It works a little bit better with 3M aluminum foil tape as a target, but I was able to tune it up to see regular shoot’n’see targets at 50 and 100 yards distance. So, it seems to me, it can be used as full-featured night vision device, not just a “heat detector”.

Q: May it be used in front of day optics?

Yes, but not as it may be expected and it seems not be designed to be used this way.

It is NOT a true clip-on device, the image is shifted comparing the day scope. You will have to zero it separately and then use Reap-IR’s recticle instead of day optics recticle.

The day optics should to have

There is good, weird and bad about this clip-on

Written on Jan 18, 2019

Unfortunately, I've used the scope just for one day and I didn't have a chance to take it to the range. So, my review is quite limited to very first impressions.

1) Very Good

First of all, it provides very fine details. Contrast and focus adjustments, seven view modes allowed me to find perfect settings for each situation I've tested it, including my basement. This is only thermal device I've ever tried that was able to find an IDPA target on a basement drywall (cardboard and drywall have very similar thermal signature). That's truly exceptional. I even think that it should be possible to zero it using regular cardboard targets, without all these foil tricks to make a cardboard target visible on thermal. I wish I could try it myself.

Second, they really succeed in reducing the washing of details by the sky and large surfaces. Just wait a moment and the scope readjusts itself to provide maximum details in the center.

Third, there is no freezing or other unpleasant effects that I have on my cheaper 320x240x30Hz thermal monocular and clip-on. Move is really smooth (even at 30Hz, by the way).

Digital zoom is good. 2x digital zoom is simply perfect. I couldn't see any difference in details. 4x digital zoom provides image similar in contrast and details with my Eotech X320 thermal monocular, so usable too.

Screen picture is extremely good and usable at 6x of day scope zoom (1.5x magnification), then survives 8x zoom (2x magnification), but then becomes too blurred at least f
