Turns out you don't need to spend $5000 to get good thermal

Written on Dec 07, 2018

Before I tried the Trail XQ30, I asked a lot of people about “the best thermal for the money.” Turns out you don't need to spend $5000 to get good thermal. The Pulsar Trail XQ30 has a picture-in-picture feature which manes the first shot a perfect one, leaving the field of view open for fast follow-ups.
The 17 micron 384 core has remarkable clarity, boosted by the AMOLED display. I can't say enough good things about this unit. Compared to competing units with 320 cores, the XQ30 wins at detection range due to having 44% more resolution: 320x240 pixels (so 76,800 total) versus 384x288 (110,592 total).
After using this unit, and one from Flir and other from ATN, it’s Pulsar hands down for me, and that's before you even get to image quality. Flir has no sound, crappy batteries, customer service problems, lack of PIP. Those are deal-breakers for me. I won’t even talk about ATN. It was so bad.
Lately I have even been taking the Trail XQ30 on daytime coyote hunts. When the light is weird, yotes are hard to spot—but they can’t hide from thermal. It seemingly sees straight through grass, tree limbs, and brush that fool our naked human eyes into seeing nothing. I’m a very happy customer.
