Compared to unertl

Written on Oct 23, 2024

Been buying Malcolms for a long time.

-Superb glass
-Rings are copy of V1 unertls, V2 unertls are still best.
-Malcolms DO NOT use the same dovetail as unertls, and the scope will sit slightly off bore line as a result.
You MUST USE the included bases for Maximum precision.

The Fact that Hilux decided to bring to market a modern 3/4 unertl style scope, just for varminting, at this price point is AWESOME.

All the kinks are ironed out!

The Gen II is what we've waited for for YEARS!!!

-The rings are head and shoulders above the the old ones. They are the 1st style unertl rings with the sliding key, not the later micrometer style. They can be re-indexed to zero! Comparable in quality to my DZ and Steve Earle Rigngs!

-The dovetail mounts are machined (old ones looked like they were cast in a rubber mold)

-The QC on all threads is Much tighter/better!

(read my GenI review for the general virtues of the glass&reticle)

The guys who seriously used the GenI scopes paid >$400 to buy all the things that now come included with the scope.
This is the way it should have been all along!

The only gripe: If you install the spring, the front brass spring retainer ring is .030" TOO Large in diameter and collides with the front scope ring. Nothing a little lathe work wont fix, but be aware.

These get a Bad rap....but it's largely undeserved
I own 2 (Both now in upgraded rings) and I'm pleased with all of them.

(I have not, nor will I ever, pay more than $500 for one!!!!)

The Good
-Coated lenses (better than ANY externally adjusted scope...30+ years of advancement)
-Tight well made tube
-Chemical etched metallic one piece reticle
-The price point! $450-500 compared to Used 3/4" Unertls, Lymans, Tascos, Feckers, and Litscherts bringing $700+ (all uncoated lenses that are 50-100yrs old.

The Bad
-The rings are NOT quality, BUT they are passable. The clicks are mushy and it pays to always over shoot and come back so you are on the same side of the thread. You can buy Super nice new rings* but you don't strictly NEED them. I waited 3 years)
*DZ Arms makes a killer set or nab some off an old Unertl
-The mounts (Just Throw them out and google "Steve Earle Prducts", "DZ Arms", or "MVA")
-No optional power eyepieces available (optional 10X or 20X would be nice!)

What you should know!
-The parallax is not fun or easy to adjust...there's a reason they don't do it this way anymore!
-You get 57ish maybe 60MOA total adjustment @ 7.2" spacing, buy a higher rear mount to add wedge (same effect as a 20 moa pic rail)
-This thing comes coated in dried cosmo like varnish, scrub clean with a spritz of WD and a cheap/coarse paper towel, oil LIGHTLY (with a real oil like G96) afterward
-Have realistic expectations! It is not a new [YourBrandHere]....The shortcomings
