Being former military I have seen Harris bipods in use by soldiers. I currently own a Harris bipods and have used it on a few different weapons. The Harris is Tried & True. Having said that and being open to new technologies and new products I was excited to get my hands on a new Magpul bipod. Now that I have had it for a few months I feel I can give an honest review. My experience with the Magpul bipod is definitely positive: the m-lok attachment gives the bipod and integrated look on a weapon with an m-lok handguard. The material is the familiar Magpul composite with metal parts. It is a well built quality product and will remain on my AR. I found the Magpul to work as expected at the range. However, my next bipod will be a Harris. This because, as many others have reviewed, the Magpul has much more “play” than I personally like. I prefer the “solid” feeling of the Harris. I could probably get used the the play in the Magpul but the one thing I just can’t get used to is the pan feature. No matter how hard I lock it down, after shooting the bipod is no longer straight. My friend from the Army, an 82nd Airborne machine gunner, loved the Magpul and actually said the play is beneficial. He dislikes the Harris because of how solid it is.
I searched and reviewed every M-4 style adapter for the HK G-3 / PTR 91 rifle as I was desperate to find a way to shorten the length of pull on my PTR 91FR. My conclusion was that in the fully closed position the M-4 style adapters do shorten the LOP, but not my much, and in any other position other than fully closed it appears the LOP is right back where you started. I then discovered the Spuhr Stock Assembly which is specifically engineered for the HK G3 / PTR 91 platform and determined that the LOP with the Spuhr Stock is substantially shorter than one could achieve with the M-4 style adapter. Free shipping from OpticsPlanet made the extra investment into the Spuhr Stock over an M-4 style adapter a bit easier and it arrived quickly. Installation was simple on my PTR 91FR and no issues whatsoever came up. Everything fit as it should. The Spuhr Stock exceeded all of my expectations and the extra cost of the Spuhr Stock was well spent. I never thought the recoil was bad to began with, as I read most people do, but this stock does in fact reduce some felt recoil which is something I was not expecting or looking for. I read another review of this stock and the person described this Spuhr Stock as allowing you to get, "nose on the charging handle close" to the rifle and I couldn't agree more. The LOP is now nearly the same as my AR/M-4.
The front sight post is the correct round version for A-1 rifles (Fit my Colt SP1 with no issues) and glows very bright. The rear sight (4-dot version) does not glow as bright as the front and I was initially concerned. However, in low light conditions the four rear dots are the perfect brightness and contrast to the front post making centering the front sight easy. After sighting in the new sights I was consistently hitting 1 gallon jugs at the 300yd mark at the public range.
Purchased the ACS stock to add weight at the rear of a Colt Competition carbine. The stock was needed to balance the weight of the silencer and bipod. The ACS stock did exactly that and then exceeded my expectations with the cheek weld, how tight it locks up, the storage, and sling mounting options. For precision shooting the cheek weld on the ACS is better than most fixed stock rifles.
