Changes my whole way of looking at carbine barrels
Written on Apr 24, 2018
It is difficult to overstate how impressed I am with this product. Every little “problem” (you know, the little things we put up with because that’s how things are?) I’ve put up with since buying this Stag AR has miraculously disappeared. Those 62 gr. handloads I made that never grouped with either of our Stag 1:9” AR’s (“Why, oh why, did I load 2000 of these unshootable rounds?”) have suddenly started grouping nicely. So, yes, moving to 1:8” twist helps with heavier bullets and will make your carbine more versatile; I’ll be trying 77 gr. loads again soon. Let me interject here that I bought this barrel in both 16”and 18” lengths, the 18” for an additional upper, and the first three shots out of that barrel were about one MOA with a red dot sight - then I had to adjust it on the rest. I have only tried the 16” barrel with MBUS sights for function check but the bullets seem to be going where I want and rapid double taps give about a two foot movement to the right at 100 yards. I’ll assume similar accuracy improvement from the 16” barrel.
Which brings me to my second point. Carbines come with carbine length gas systems. Duh! Unless you are an avid three-gunner who needs anything else? Oh, I don’t know...everyone? Increasing the dwell time makes for a smoother, reduced recoil rifle. If you add all the other stuff I’ve already done trying to relieve my rebuilt shoulder from the sharp-ish stock recoil (muzzle brake, balanced bolt, heavier buffer) the thing is virtually recoil fre
