Vortex Viper 1x24 mm 6 MOA Red Dot Sight (so good I bought two!)

Written on Jul 22, 2024

I shoot USPSA and Steel Challenge Competitively a few times a month. I'm a B class shooter, and take my gear seriously. I shoot a Glock 34 with a Holosun Competition Red Dot Sight with a green reticle.

I recently started shooting Steel Challenge Rimfire with my Ruger 10/22 and a Ruger 22/45. Although I like my Holosun Red Dot sights I didnt want to spend a ton of money on two new optics. Plus, for me the 2moa dot on my Holosun sites are too small, and the bigger 32moa is too big. With the Comp site the 8moa is pretty nice, but I was intrigued by the 6moa on the Vortex Viper.

I purchased one at a great price from Optics Planed and got it mounted on my 10/22 and zero'd it in. So far, its right on zero but I have only used it at the range to zero the optic for competitively for one match. In terms of sight adjustment it was pretty straight forward to zero in (the usual windage and elevation adjustments and the clicks were fairly crips) but I'm not sure why they have a lock/unlock feature for the sight adjustments, but it didn't seem to impede the process too when I zeroed so just rolled with it. Only time will tell if it holds zero, or if that lock/unlock function will be a problem, but so far so good.

In terms of usability for competition shooting I really like Viper field of view and the 6moa dot is just about the right size for quick shooting. I actually prefer the red dot to the green dot and the dot on the Viper seems very bright. I have only used it during the day, but
