Why buy a PST when there the Ares

Written on Apr 15, 2019

I bought an Ares when they were on sale and decided to try it out. I've had multiple PST's and PST gen 2 and decided to compare them to the Ares as it appears to be it's direct competition. The Ares is identical pretty much across the board. Glass is pretty much equal. Reticles are similar in design. Eye boxes were about the same too, the Ares had a little more forgiving eye relief. The only part of the Ares that falls short to the PST was the turrets not being nearly as defined. I messed with the turrets o-ring's a bit and it helped but in the end I removed the o-ring after Athlon informed me that the o-ring really isn't needed anyways. Now the Ares turret's are 95% as good as the PST at $300+ less than the PST. In my book it's a no brainer, the Ares beats the PST. If they were the same price then the PST would slightly edge out the Ares but when considering price and that these scope are about as identical in quality and features as can be, you'd be crazy not to consider the Ares.

For the price, it's great, but I wish it was a little better.

Bought this scope to put on an SBR-AR15 that will function as a truck/trunk gun because of Vortex's phenomenal warranty if anything happens to it while transporting. Overall this is a great scope. A couple of surprises with this scope was there is a storage compartment for an extra battery under the windage cap (very neat) and the thought that was put into the reticle for quick shots at range. There are a few things that I wish were better though. At x1 power there is some definite fish-eye effect going on and I would not suggest this for any sort of competition. Also, the reticle is just a bit thick. It's thick enough that if you want to shoot over 200 yards the reticle is going to cover more of the target than other scopes. I know it's not a scope meant for precision but a slightly thinner reticle would be nice. Overall, I think the scope is worth buying. If it wasn't Vortex's amazing warranty I would say it's a tad overpriced but the extra peace-of-mind of their warranty makes up for it. One last thing to note, the picture shown is dead on for the color. They advertise the color as matte but this is an anodized finish and has the same shine as black anodized finish. It's not much of a shine but it's too much to be considered matte in my opinion.

I can never go back

Written on Feb 26, 2018

I bought a pair of these on the recommendation of my brother who had used a pair of these in the military. I was hesitant because of the price but had some gift cards to blow and decided to take the dive. These binoculars are amazing. After a year of use I decided to pull out my old Leupold binoculars that cost me a fair amount less and there is no comparison. These are hands down the best binoculars I've ever used. If you can spend the money to buy these, just do it, you will not be disappointed.
