One Station Case Trim/Prep Unit

Written on Sep 05, 2016

Reasonably priced electric case prep unit trims and chamfers cases and cleans primer pockets on a wide variety of cases. Unit indexes on case shoulder by use of various size collets and inserts. User trims case by adjusting the cutter head and then pressing the case into the unit to meet the cutter. User will feel and see the cutter removing excess brass. Case is trimmed when the user feels no more resistance as the case is pressed against the cutter. Case sizing is not uniformly precise because of indexing on shoulder so care must be taken to measure as cases are trimmed. Machine has good power/torque and can be positioned in several configurations to suite the operator. The supplied cutter head does not employ a pilot but its spindle and the other tool mounts have an industry common thread so other attachments can be substituted as desired. Adjustment of the cutter head is trial and error despite the markings etched on the adjustment ring. The user will become reasonably proficient with practice and avoid excessive trimming.
Recommend cleaning after use to remove buildup of brass shavings and other crud. Spray with gun cleaner and use a brush.
May not be quite as precise or as multifunctional as some other (considerably more expensive) units but is well made, durable, effective and very reasonably priced. Recommend strongly with the few caveats mentioned.

Hornady Powder Drop and Hardware

Written on Jul 09, 2016

Recently started reloading using Hornady Lock N Load AP Press. Do pistol and rifle. To change between pistol and rifle case sizes requires a change of powder dispensing rotor and measuring meter. Buying a second powder unit allows a quicker changeover.
From the picture shown on both the Hornady and Optics websites one would gather that the red drum and rotor body are part of the package and that the only additional item needed is the lower mounting assembly which is shown separately on both websites.
Such is not the case. Ordering the above item brings both the upper and lower mechanical mounts but not the red rotor body, rotor and measuring device. I ended up with two lower units and no red drum, rotor and measuring device - these must be ordered separately at additional cost.
I returned the unneeded lower attachment device to Optics Planet with no problems; as usual, their customer service was excellent.
I do NOT fault Optics Planet for this incident. I do fault Hornady for providing misleading pictures and vague descriptions of contents. Look at the picture and judge for yourself.
The Hornady gear works well and I have no complaints as to the function and quality.
