I picked up a couple of these for about $60. I definitely shredded the aluminum barrel nut while installing it but not too much to keep it from functioning properly. I’ll take my time while installing the next one. It looks mean and feels mean on the bare hands. I’d recommend grinding off the gnar where you don’t need it. It thins up nicely and looks pretty neat with a little time on a belt grinder, if you gots access to one.
Converting your AR to a piston gas system may be the best upgrade option if you are looking for reliability. It’s also nice if you sent a fan of cleaning your receiver regularly. I’d recommend it to any survival build. Thanks Optics Planet for the fast service!
This is a solid, simple and lightweight upper receiver. A great upper for a sport shooter or someone that is looking to minimize their build. I’m a fan of its slickness. There isn’t much to snag on gear when running and gunning.
I’ve tried both of the Magpul AFG designs and am a fan of the side walls on the AFG1. They smooth out the transition to the hand guard and offer heat protection. The knuckle in the middle of the grip is reversible or removable. It adds a bit off weight because the rail required to attach it to an m-lok hand guard is a bit large but still not a deal breaker. I will say that it fattens up the overall hand guard grip quite a bit, making a raised pressure switch seem like a reach. Overall it feels good and gives ME more stability.
I’ve compared the Fostech and the Franklin side by side and shot by shot. Both are very nice triggers and function well so long as the rest of your rifle is set up to accompany the action. The triggers do not function in the same manner however. The Fostech (in Echo mode)requires a more full motion of the trigger. The reset for the second shot is located near the far back end of the trigger action range. If the trigger is not pulled back far enough to reach that point the second shot will not release when the trigger is let forward again. Then the trigger must still be pulled back beyond that point before the next round will release. It’s not ideal but this does eliminate the issue of finding the “sweet spot” in the trigger action, where the hammer doesn’t catch and will follow the bolt (hammer follow). The Franklin (in binary mode) has a much closer action but hammer follow is a known issue. Light strikes occur and a round must be manually cleared. In the end I’d go with the Fostech if you don’t mind the trigger action being soo big (Echo mode only)... I just wish they made a straight trigger version, I really like the feel of the Franklin straight trigger action.
I had been dreaming about owning a AR with the reliability of an AK fo a long time and now I feel like that dream has come true. It took a bit if time before I was able to find the model that I was looking for in stock but was worth every penny and second spent. I have put about 200 various loads through it and no issues. It runs binary without issues as well. The ability to switch between single shot, suppressed and full gas is a definite plus for me. The included bolt carrier is high quality and the adjustable Picatinny gas block is solid with a nice finish. The system keeps my rife cleaner for Much longer than before. I would recommend it to anyone that is looking to upgrade their rifles reliability and capability.
