Pilot's Review of Carson Aura 2X/4X Digital Night Vision Monocular

This is a good product, and if you are looking for low cost NV, digital is the way to go. To preserve the three AAAs in prolonged use (varmit hunting), one should use a low refresh rate (8 or 15 fps), which is a bit jerky. Also, even with new batteries, the number of bars decreases with progressively higher IR illumination levels selected. One good feature is that the supplemental IR light can be turned off to save the battery and provide greater stealth in security applications, although I doubt most will be using entry level NV for critical security purposes. If I had to do it over, I would have purchased the Plus model (not available when I made my purchase) for within $40 more, very similar to this model except for much greater range and video capability, although also with three AAA batteries. Since I already have this model, I'm holding out for Carson's possible follow-on model to the Plus, one with a less pixelated screen (not so obvious lines), and one or two CR123A batteries to support prolonged use of a 30 frame per sec (or more) refresh rate. Right now, I suspect this (and the Plus model) are the best buys on the market in low cost NV.
Pros:
  • Cost; IR light can be turned off to save battery
Cons:
  • None
