Chalie's Review of Celestron C70 Mini Mak 25-75x Zoom Spotting Scope 52238

I bought this scope years ago when I didn't want to drag a 45 pound Dobsknian up to the park to make a 15-minute sunspot count. The tripod isn't worth anything but you know that just looking at the picture. I find the image starts to go soft above 50x magnification. I don't like the focuser but then I hace never met a catadioptric focuser I did like. I can count sunspots, identify lunar features, watch the movement if the Galilean moons of Jupiter and see the rings of Saturn. I also use it for identifying distant birds if they will stay still long enough. This has been a good grab and go which has been largely unused lately after having acquired a small apochromatic refractor. But it will likely see service again at the end of the month when I do a stargazing event for elementary school kids who don't understand "Do NOT touch the telescope."
Pros:
  • Portable
Cons:
  • Need to supply your own tripod
  • Focuser has a lot of backlash
Best Used for:
  • Grab and go astronomy and birding
