Average Shot Joe's Review of Competition Electronics ProTimer BT Shot Timer

I seriously can't believe the state of the market on shot timers right now. You cannot find a timer that is waterproof, backlit, and capable of many other basic features like adjustable sensitivity in one package. I see there is one model coming out from Kestrel Ballistics which might offer a comprehensive suite of features but it looks like it may STILL be missing a backlit screen. It's 2022, it blows my mind the engineering and quality of these devices is still fast-food happy meal toy quality at best if not actually worse.

Let me get to the reason why I went with the ProTimer BT: company that is basically industry standard for shot timers, adjustable sensitivity, backlit screen, and bluetooth. I would really have liked to have had this be weatherproof since I shoot a lot in bad weather conditions but apparently rubber gaskets is asking too much. Let me get to the build quality which is absolutely terrible. I dabble in DIY electronics and I can tell you this thing feels like it's made out of the most dollar-store brand-imitation kids toy from a third-world quality plastic and components. I've had it for a week and taken it on exactly one range trip and already the screen has a nick in it and the paint labeling is chipping off. It spent most of it's time clipped to my backpack that was sitting in my trunk with a fabric interior.

The buttons feel flimsy and the metal clip is literally a single piece bent of metal, not even a spring loaded hinge. The bare-minimum exposed speaker and microphone ports feel like they're just waiting for some piece of dust or debris to work it's way inside and tank the functionality. It boggles the mind in a field where everyone is primarily concerned about tough reliability and quality of American-made products this thing manages to be regarded as the "gold standard." It should be fool's gold standard if you ask me.

On top of all this I feel like the software engineering that went into this product in these times is pedestrian at best. The Bluetooth functionality managed to screw up a firmware update three times and I'm saying this as a professional programmer, where updates and technology are my daily grind. I am also annoyed that the device cannot pickup dry-fire with striker-fired pistols. Even with the sensitivity maxed out and in a quiet room I have to hold the handgun within 2" of the microphone for it to even register and even then it will pick it up as multiple shots.

I cannot believe the audacity of these manufacturers to charge $100+ for these products. Somebody, anybody, please build a better and more competent shot timer, even open-source it so people can DIY it themselves and nuke this stagnant and complacent market niche.
