Dave's Review of Element Optics Helix 1500 6x22mm Ballistic Rangefinder
This BLRF (Ballistic Laser Range Finder) is about twice the size of my Bushnell Bone Collector RF but it gives me much longer battery life, the ability to recharge the battery within the BLRF (via USB-C port without removing the battery which is awesome) and a greater ranging capability (honestly, more range than I will probably ever need where I live and hunt). The ocular lens assembly has a two-position telescoping diopter and adjustable focus ring! This BLRF also has a tripod mounting plate on the bottom and lanyard connection points. It also ships with an olive drab case with both molle and lanyard straps and a 18650 battery. The main selling point is the ballistic ranging capability of the sweet unit and it absolutely delivers. I was so impressed with it that I decided to also buy the Element RF module that mounts to the scope to give me maximum flexibility on my setups. The bluetooth connection and App configuration is very straight forward although I do wish it was setup a little more like Athlon's Range Pro Accounts where I could store all of my profiles in a Cloud Account instead of being limited to only FOUR that I have to constantly change when trying out different cartridges. Their database is limited too so I usually have to fill in the gaps when prepping for my range trips so I can spend more time shooting than punching data into my phone and tablet. This, by the way, is how I get around the limited profile support - I paired my phone to the RF module and paired my Android tablet to my Helix 1500 in order to give me up to eight profiles to store my builds. Then, on the range when I switch rifles, I switch mobile devices and upload the appropriate profile into the BLRF. It just gives me more time to plink since I live so far away from my closest range. I think Element's BLRFs are the best value for the price and while their app could use a little more refinement (for range trips), I think it is really geared toward the 'already tweaked' setup for a hunting trip where you have trued your loadout and you know exactly which ballistic profile you are going to use for your trip. Element's app and BLRF are geared for this person, in my opinion.
OK, let me address a couple of small negatives:
(1) the eye relief is a little short but the glass is clear
(2) the battery compartment lid has a hinged plastic flip up tab that you use to twist the cover on and off. It is gasketed with aluminum threading that seems hard enough to prevent cross-threading but when you place a b battery into the compartment, the battery spring compresses and makes replacing the battery a chore. I was so afraid that I was going to break the lid's tab that I applied a light coating of EW grease on the threads and that literally did the trick for me. Just make sure you do not put too much on those threads. Also make sure that if you purchase aftermarket rechargeable batteries, you purchase the non-button-top style of battery because the length of the battery must be within a millimeter or so of the original battery or you will risk putting too much pressure on the twist-tab on the lid and breaking it off or even cross-threading your lid. I strongly recommend you physically measure your battery then find a compatible one (no-button top style) on the WWW.
Overall, I give this BLRF as solid five stars and if ever drop this one off a cliff, I will immediately replace it with the exact same unit because it is a fantastic product.
