This is my first night vision product and I did a lot of research. The gen 1 was the only option in my price range and The price and quality of the LOMO ELF-1 where the deciding factors in my decision. Be sure you read the owners manual before operating the unit!! It will walk you through the proper way of operation and focusing process. After testing the unit I was quiet pleased with the performance. It did as well as described in the owners manual and the addition of a secondary IR light aloud me to easily view past 100 yards in total dark conditions. It has some good mounting options and I plan to experiment with it on my rifle. I purchased this item because of coyote issues on my farm. I am pleased with this purchase and would recommend this product.
Pros:
- good price
- Compact & light
- user frendly

Build quality is bad, levers rattle and move. Picture has artifacts, and can't focus 100%. If I didn't return it, I'd use it to spy on racoons stealing my trash, or possibly short walks in the dark if a flashlight is not available/usable.

I bought this for $99 shipped, it's got very few imperfections in the image, and works great with a budget IR illuminator. A lot of people will talk sown about Gen1 night vision, but with this you can easily find our way without being seen. Threaded portion does fit J-arm and simmilar mounts, but a second generation Rhino is required for proper eye box positioning. Integrated IR is more than enough for trail navigation and inside a structure but anything past about 20yds requires a seperate illuminator. For less than most tactical white lights this gives you ninja-in-the-dark powers, well worth a few bucks!!
Pros:
- low cost, low weight, size, clairity
Cons:
- limited range of integrated IR, limitations of Gen1 NV devices
Best Used for:
- trail navigation, hunting, power outages, camping, ninha adventures

Barely gen tier. Good as a toy but nothing else. IR doesn't do so well. More artifacts in the view than described and is hard to focus. Ad said you could get out to 50 meters but it's more realistically 10 meters. Bummed.

When I bought this there were no other scopes in the $100 range. I'm pretty happy with it for that price becuase it works well, especially at close range with the IR lamp on. But there is a very narrow depth of field, so you have to constantly refocus it to change between close and distant objects. But overall it's a fun toy.
Pros: batteries last forever, decent night vision
Cons: hard to focus image

Neat little unit for the money.
Not the best quality amplification, and will need an additional illuminator to be effective (I think the illuminator is just a red led, not a true IR light)
Pros: smal size, no magnification, 22 degree field
Cons: poor illuminator

The Elf is a neat little toy- small enough to carry anywhere, and it runs forever on common batteries. It does have one rather annoying feature- periodically the display will start to oscillate in a way that will startle you and alert any animals you're watching that there's someone close by- as well as wiping out your night vision. If you can put up with that quirk, it's a neat toy.
Pros: Tiny, effective, inexpensive
Cons: periodic blooming
