Perfect for weirdos - Elite Survival Systems MVP Commandant Tactical Holster Vests
BrazilianWaxAndTheBananaHammock's Review of Elite Survival Systems MVP Commandant Tactical Holster Vests
I'm a weirdo. The right hand is for pistols, the left for rifles (eye dominance).
This is one of the few vests that is truly ambidextrous in design. The shoulders aren't built up with buttstock pads or extra pouches nobody really needs. That's my problem with most tactical vests / chests rigs: too many places to put stuff and not enough places to carry what you need. This one takes the cake.
The pouches it does include are well thought out, and this works perfectly to make magazines readily available to my natural goofy needs in competition. Rifle mags are ready for speedy reloads from my right hand, and the pouches fit six of them perfectly (as advertised). Once the shoulder fit is adjusted (long torso), the hand naturally finds them. Best of all, the offset of the mag carriers doesn't interfere with going prone (unless you're a belly-flopper) when running with the vest open, adjusted so the zipper doesn't connect. This isn't an issue at all if you have it secured to your gun belt: the two clips cinch it down just right.
The pistol holster is well designed and fits a wide range of weapons, with or without tac lights. It's easily adjusted and comes with two retainers: a speed bungee and a plastic clip. When running with the vest open like I prefer, the draw is perfect to access over a rifle carried on a two point. The pistol mag carrier is in a great location for easy access to reloading without much fuss.
Some have complained about the lack of velcro on the pistol mag pouch on the rifle mag side (I know this is kind of confusing). I don't mind this: it make a great location to carry pepper spray or a small flashlight on a lanyard.
The only random pouch is above the rifle mag carrier. I wish there were six shell loops instead of five, but hey... oh well. I use this to stash backup eye and ear pro.
The pouch in the back panel is perfectly sized for an insulated 2L hydration pouch. and there's a document/map pocket on each of the side panels.
There's A TON of Molle retention all over the vest. I run an IFAK on my left side [keeping the right slick (except for a small cell pouch and retainer to keep a rifle on a one point from hitting my dangling bits) for slinging my rifle] and a larger trauma kit on the lower back with a scabbard for a coach gun. There's room and the 1000 nylon is plenty durable for a coach gun.
When using a pack, the rear panel offers good ventilation so the Osprey can do its job keeping me cool.
I tend to keep the shoulders clear for switching between strong and weak side around barriers/cover, but there's room for a knife/flashlight if that's your thing.
When tied into a good gun belt, this vest makes the combat load feel solid and comfortable. There's plenty of room for a revolver holster and speed loader carrier on the belt when the vest is adjusted correctly, and the drag handle is secure enough to drag a 230lb guy across the driveway.
It's ventilated well (especially if running the vest open in front) and once the heavy nylon is 100% broken in, it'll feel like a second skin. There's a trade off for durability, and the 1000D fabric is harsh when brand new: it chewed up my sunburn good the first time I wore it. However, there's a reason why good suppliers use it: the stuff is virtually bombproof, especially if you treat it with a Teflon waterproofer.
I can't recommend this vest more strongly, and the premium is worth it. This is not a cosplay item. It's a very well thought out piece of kit seemingly designed around my unique needs. It may or may not work for you, but that's the whole point behind a return/refund policy, isn't it?
