Mike's Review of EOTech HWS EXPS3 1x30mm Holographic Red Dot Sight

Lets face it, if you are in the market for a red dot you are in between the EXPS and the T2. Why? Well, because these two are the kings of red dots. There are a lot of reasons as to why you should get an EOTech and only one reason why you should get an Aimpoint. That reason is battery life. T2 wins with years of battery life compared to 600 hours of the EXPS. Done. Thats it. Nothing else. Now give me one solid reason as to why you even care about battery life. You shouldn't and I’ll tell you why. There are 3 reasons you need extensive battery life/power. 1) Deployment 2) Home Defense 3) End of the world/society. Neither apply to your choice. 1) If you are deployed you’re issued your equipment you don't choose. 2) Unless you live in a mansion I don't know why you’re using a rifle for HD, a pistol will always be the fastest to deploy, but if you are so worried that you can't grab-aim and go to work without turning the reticle on, just add an offset HS507c and you’re gtg. 3) If society collapses battery life will be the least of your problems. Plus an LPVO or an ACOG would be the better choice for this scenario. So you see the battery life of the T2 doesn't even matter. Now lets talk why you should get the EXPS. 1) Astigmatism. Chances are you got it. And if you don't I’m sure you have some kind of eye issues that you don't even know. Well with the Eotech it doesn't freaking matter how bad your eyes are you will clearly see the reticle as if your vision is 20/20. 2) Parallax Free. It doesn't matter what the angle or shooting position is the round always hits the target. It makes a bad shooter seem like a marksman. 3) Field of View. There is no tube-like view like the T2 so literally all you see is the reticle. Both eyes open and the reticle just appears on the target. The best part is that since its holographic the reticle feels like its on the target like a laser rather than in front of the target like the LED T2. 4) Holographic 68 MOA reticle. Most people think the 68 moa circle around the 1 moa dot is only for fast target acquisition. While that is true and it helps tremendously for CQB it offers more than that. Its a target distance measurement reference. You see 1 moa at 100 yards is 1 inch. That means that 68 moa at 100 yards is 68”. Thats the average human height. If a human figure fits in the circle top to bottom, that translates to an approximate distance of 100 yards. If the figure fills half the circle that would be 200 yards and so on. 5) Magnification. Red dots thrive from 0 to 300 yards. You can easily hit a 6 inch vital grouping up to 300 yards with no hold overs. No Hold Overs! Now that is impressive but identifying targets passed 200 yards can become tricky. Thats where the G33 comes in. And one big problem that the T2 has when it comes to magnification is that the dot is magnified too. Not with the EOTech. The EXPS no matter what the magnification is the 1 MOA dot remains 1 MOA due to its holographic properties. To understand how important this is the T2 has a 2 MOA dot. That covers 2 inches at 100 yards, remember? Now magnify that by 3x and you are covering roughly 18 inches of the target at 300 yards. That makes it physically impossible to hit a target that far. At 300 yards the EOTech covers only 3 inches. Now I could go on adding more benefits but aren't these enough already to beat the one benefit the T2 has? Maybe one day in the future we’ll get an EXPS with a battery life of 50k hours that weighs under 10oz, who knows. But until then the EOTech EXPS still wins with the one extra benefit that no other has. It looks cool. And nothing else matters if you don't look cool.

  • Everything about it
