Frost's Review of EOTech Drop In Replacement Laser Battery Cap for 512/552/518/558 Holographic Weapon Sights

I purchased the LBC2 vis/IR combo laser module to go with my EOTech 558 and have been immensely pleased with it over the past few months. It's important to note I'm using it with a 16" .308/7.62x51mm AR, so it gets a much heavier beating than the usual .223/5.56x45mm. It's stood up to .308 like a champ, though. It's robust, easy to adjust, holds zero perfectly once set.

It is about as bright as you can expect from a civilian-legal laser. In daylight it's visible to about 25 yards without magnification, or 50-75 with magnification. At night the visible laser can be seen clearly over tremendous distances, and the IR laser is easily good out to 100-200 yards depending on how good your vision and equipment is. Being mounted so close to the optic's line of sight, it has a very long range overlap with the reticle's center dot before they diverge.

One big plus is sharing the same batteries with the sight. You only have one set of AAs to worry about for both your optic and your laser module, and when the shared source gets low, your optic will let you know by blinking. Easy to keep spares on hand for a nice unified system like this. Another bonus is the tension between the contacts and the batteries is greater than with a normal EOTech battery cap, which completely eliminates any loss of contact under heavy recoil.

The only major downside is the size tolerances are much tighter than on a standard battery cap. Since AA NiMHs are very slightly wider than AA alkalines and AA lithiums, you won't be able to fit rechargeables without keeping a pair of needlenosed pliers on hand to remove them. Given the extremely tight fit of AA rechargeables, the risk of leakage of AA alkalines ruining your equipment, the lower weight of AA lithiums, and the increased power draw due to the optic and laser using the same source, I would recommend the use of AA lithiums exclusively with this module.

Finally, unlike a lot of laser modules, the LBC DOES NOT slowly discharge over time when turned off.
Pros:
  • Simple installation
  • extremely durable
  • Does not drain while turned off even for months
  • Exceptional night visibility
  • Good day visibility
  • Increased tension between batteries and contacts vs. regular battery cap
  • Holds zero under heavy recoil
Cons:
  • AA NiMH Rechargeables do not fit well
Would Recommend: Yes
